There are some nice clean classic out there, but you will need to pay more for a nice one, there are so many thrashed, unloved, chav'ed cars out there. Rust is an issues on the rear arches and bottom off the front wings, classics are also prone to marked glass. I would suggest a late classic as they have the 440 injectors and 4pot sti brakes as standard. The later engines are prone to Maff issues but it's a common issue and easy to fix.

As with all cars, belts need to be changed regularly, service history is important, clutches arent cheap or quick to fix, so check the biting points and check for slipping or noises.

To test the clutch in a late UK classic, get upto 45-50mph normally, pop it into 5th (should be around 1,800-2,000rpm), and plant it. This will be the clutch under full load and the best scenario (with mechancial sympathy) to see if it slips.
