Default Owners of Pre-Face Lifts

Hi guys,

I am looking at getting my 94 WRX preface remapped to around 300/300, the car is on 60k, full services on time, Apexi shocks and springs, fully braced up, 4 pots on the front and 2 pots on the rear, decat, boost gauges etc. The only thing left to complete is the fitting of an ARC TMIC, 440 injectors, 3-port and fitting and mapping of the Apexi PFC.

I’m after owners input and experiences of taking the same route I have and the highs and lows. I would also be good to see of any progress threads or build threads on this spec and age Impreza as preface lift information can be hard to come by on SN

At the time I'm not thinking of going fully forged or 6 speeds etc as unfortunately funds are simply not there at the present time

Thanks

I went for a front mount on mine and similar mods to yours and then an Andy F map on the apexi. The car felt amazing afterward but unfortunately my clutch on lasted a week and had to be replaced

Thanks bud, what power did you aim for or get I should ask?

The one thing that is a slight bone of contention is the power and reliability of the these early WRX engines, really that is why I'm aiming for 300 and not much more, any more and I will expect the worst to happen at some point.

The original turbo is maxed out at about 320 ish. I never had it on the rollers but it was quick and a big improvement.

Cheers! I look forward to hearing how you get on with yours. Good to see a few more pre face lifts out there.

I did the same sort of thing as you a few years back on a MY95 WRX. FMIC just to get rid of the slanty inter-warmer, de-cat, induction kit & exhaust.

I used a Polar Performance chip instead of a re-map so stuck with the 380 CC's and got 303bhp / 290 ft/lbs @1.1 bar.

Clutch had already been uprated to Exedy when it had gone previously and drove it for 3 years or so and it was fine. Had it RR'd a couple of times a year at club RR days which put my mind at rest about the fuelling (always ran rich on the chip anyway!)

The only thing I may say is the Apexi is getting on a bit now and you may want to consider the ESL instead. Modern technology & MAF-less, and overall a great bit of kit from what I have heard.

Good luck & enjoy

Thanks guys,

I have been looking at the ESL on JGM's site, looks like a good alternative to a Apexi.

TD05 16g is good for up to around 350bhp, Paul. Mine made 330bhp.

To the OP,

94 WRX has a 3 port boost control solenoid as standard, unless you mean the Apexi item as part of the boost control kit?

Be prepared for the gearbox to let go.

I've killed 2 TY752 5 speeds, but, the TY754 5 speed that's in now is still going strong after 4 years, I think it is now. It had the crap kicked out of it on a drag strip the day after it was fitted.

Here is some more up to date info on the new ESL system:

The hardware is £295+VAT. IMHO I don't think it makes much sense to fit an Apexi.

Thanks guys, very helpful

Yes that is the next thing about these early motors the notorious TY52 box, I have felt more firmness in a bowl of soup from a spoon than this box, dare the day I even think about a quick or aggressive gear change...

I thought the WRX's only come a 2 port solnoid?

Worry about the gearbox when it goes. I've heard of early WRX gearbox go on for years at 350bhp yet some break at standard power. Newage gearboxs don't seem much better either. Only the 6 speed seems to be ok.

I think it may be more down to the TD05 on the early cars. They bring a lot of torque in at once so strain the drivetrain, where as later classics use a VF turbo that brings power in from earlier and is more progressive.

2nd hand gearboxs are readily available and are as cheap as chips.

TY754 boxes are stronger. You need to match front and rear diff ratios.

All early classics have a 3 port boost solenoid AFAIK. The setup is pretty good out of the box as they have a 340hp turbo as stock (We've seen nearly 370hp on a 16g with meth mix). A FMIC, bigger injectors, induction, decat and a later MAP sensor is a sensible spec to map.

Decent suspension and stoppers and I used to beat GT3RS Porsches at sprint events with the same spec.

Agreed about the boxes. Getting a fast change from 2nd to 3rd in mine is nigh on impossible. Stirring soup is definitely where it's at. Suppose I better get the 6 speed fitted that I've had since January.

Not quite, but not far off. It's not about the value of the car for me. I've had it nearly 10 years.
