Default 2009 Impreza STI

Evening all

Today I've been for a test drive in 2 of the above. The one I preferred has circa 20k on the clock, full history and will come with 12 months test.

The car is totally standard in WRC blue, interior looks to be unmarked and it did drive really well.

Is there anything in particular to look out for on these or any particular weakness? This one is advertised as being 300bhp though I've seen some 2009 cars which apparently only have 280bhp, was there some kind of face lift around this time?

On the test drive the average mpg didn't rise above 12, I appreciate this was from cold standing but it didn't get that much stick, I was expecting nearer 20

This could be my first step into a Japenese car after many many different German ones.

Yeah I'd say 12mpg sounds about right for 300bhp with 'around town' driving if my 05 STI Prodrive is anything to go by.

Much better on a motorway run if you pootle along at 70mph off boost.

420bhp in mine 28-30mpg on a cruise at 80mph and as low as 8mpg kicking its C**T in

OP you maybe arnt aware that to get the mpg gauge to read per journey you have to reset trip a or b to get live data otherwise it just reads lifetime on that trip

Cheers Rob, I wasn't aware of that, it was literally jump in and drive. The manual was in the glove box but I didn't have time to plough through it.

Are these generally a reliable motor if serviced correctly and on time?

Wirh respect to the comments above...

TBH 12 mpg doesn't sound right unless the guy who drove it before you absolutely hammered it non stop for 'a good few miles'. If you had a reasonable drive it should have 'come up' a few more mpg.

I've generally made 16/17 mpg around town, 24-28mpg on a run, 15mpg and less driven like an animal....

FWIW. these are great cars all with 296 bhp / 305 ps. But early models suffered heavily with engine failure due primarily to poor mapping. If you do take the plunge you MUST also be prepared to remap with a specialist which will not only give you a safer / better map but really liven everything up releasing 35+/- bhp.

Good luck. Remembering at least one in ten of the early cars suffered engine failure. Absolute best option is to find one rebuilt properly with forged pistons and rods.

Best mate.

Cheers mate, when you say early cars what age/year are you talking about specifically?

Depends if your car is JDM or UK/EU car

On a 1000 mile journey following a brick to the ring and back my 2011 saloon made 34.4mpg bit now mixed driving closer to 26mg but really hits mpg if goes over 70mph.

I do get 19 ISH around town and 12.5 spirited run.

Yet my 2006 hawk did 24mpg on motorway if 65 or 90 made it no difference.

Average over 10k miles was 21mpg.

Im getting better mpg in the 2.5 than I ever got in any of the 2.0 litres, and running in sports plus seems to get best results strangely...............although I think I drive slower nowadays

Just found this thread https://www.scoobynet.com/scoobynet-...-failures.html

Very worrying really, not sure if I could be bothered with the hassle of that.

Just get a 2.0ltr JDM instead

400-500bhp on STD internals no problem

Roughly what would be the cost of having the forged parts fitted if done before the engine actually went bang?

If you use that daft 'I mode;', you'll actually find your MPG drop a lot

2.5 sti on stock internals with 20k on clock , so U can expect engine problem soon
See tread " 2.5engines failure "

If U drive in the town your mpg should be around 15mpg , outside town 20+

I've rebuild my engine with forged stuff in it , and no probs so far

Good luck

That would break my heart having to spend £5k on a rebuild for a car I'd just bought.

12 MPG suggests it is being ragged everywhere. Should get low 20's with half sensible right foot.

Do be careful though with the engines reputation, loads of owners have suffered.

Your in Somerset - Enginetuner are in Plymouth. Speak to Alan Jeffrey re engine rebuilds.

Prob £2.5k for pistons only. Maybe £3k inc rods and uprated oil pump.

TBH you should look around and find one that hasnt got 12mpg on the dash - its not really a good sign that the car is being cared for....
