road tax driving me crazy
Thought this might entertain you guys,
Got my Scooby on saturday, sent the V5 off and the tax runs out today.
Took the V5/2c to the post office to buy tax and they said they need proof of insurance.
Doesn't seem to be an option to print off my insurance document on privileges website and the new document hasn't arrived by post yet.
Phoned them up yesterday they said as they would have to "print the document early" it would cost £ 9.95 for them to print and fax it to me. I said forget it.
Phoned up again today and said can you waver that fee, the woman said it would be unfair to the other customers if she did, I said fine can you send me a cover note instead for free, she said yes but what do I want it for?
I said I will try and get the post office to tax the vehicle using a cover note, she said oh well I can't put that as a reason or they will decline it, fine I said just put down that its for records. She then goes well these phone calls are recorded so I can't do that now.
With that I just gave in and said fine I'll be without tax for a few days and hung up.
There's no way I'm paying 10 quid for a fax, so annoyed

You cannot tax a car online unless your current address is on the V5, the gov website asks if it is and when you click no it then says you cannot use the online tax at this time

I had a similar problem. However my local post office said they would accept a fax from the insurance company.
Might be worth ringing the post office and see if they're happy with this and get their fax number.
Once it was set in place, i now like nearly everyone else just buy it online.
If you are going to run the risk of driving the car i'd keep all details with you in case you get pulled so you can explain the situation as you could get your vehicle seized plus a fine for no tax, recovery fee and pound fees.

It sounds like my mums experience every year got knows why she don't change it, but he insurance renews on the same date her tax does so when she phones up to buy tax they won't do it as the new policy isn't on there database, has to wait 5 days after the date to tax it!

@ron, DVLA changed the rules recently its now a legal requirement for post offices to accept faxes.
I am aware on the post office website it says otherwise but I spoke with DVLA directly.
Car now taxed, woot =)
