I think I caught this problem pre-delivery. They (Cheam Motors) said that it went up to 6k fine, then ran like a dog. Some of the ECU mappings were corrupt, so I had to kick my heels for a week until a new one could be DHL'd in and fitted.
Can't say for definate it's fixed, as I am running in at the moment, but they seem happy to let it go out. Since the problem is now a matter of record with my motor, they have backed themselves into a corner if it happens again.

Which of course does beg the question Orville - how are they going to find out if the problem exists at a certain rev range without actually trying it?

Just got back from the dealer.
They said they had seen the problems i said about after a test drive.
They gave me the techincal bulletin i spoke about which after I read it, was issued on 28/2/01 by Subaru UK but refers to the MY99/00 cars not the MY01 cars.
So I asked them about it and said that if they had seen it on the test drive there must still be a problem then. I will contact original dealer (Listers, Worcester) and also Subaru UK, and the dealer (Lancaster, Pangbourne) will contact Subaru UK.
So they have admitted a problem with the car, but will not fix it. Nice !

No problem Dave.
the plate is [deleted] if they want to know which particular vehicle it was.
They run them up to max boost for about 10 seconds during the pre-delivery inspection to pick out problems like this. I thought it was standard dealer practice when they told me ...
As far as I am aware they sourced a completely new ECU from Subaru Japan.

If you haven't already done so - speak to Andy Barker at Cheam Motors - 020 8394 2262. He will be able to help you.
Cheers

I spoke to my dealer where the car went in yesterday and they said that the bulletin they showed me about the MY99/00 models applied to the MY01 models too.
When I asked why this wasnt stated on the technical bulletin, and told them the fact that it was a different problem (which they had previously acknowledged) it all went a bit quiet.

Andy was busy when i called him but get this. A colleague of mine has a Ford Racing Puma and is on the pumapeople list. Another FRP owners Dad hs just got a new WRX and he has seen exactly the same problems as me. See below excerpt from BBS msg by my mate...
> I'm interested to know what the problems where with the engine managment. I'm asking because a friend at work has just got a new Scooby Turbo and its fairly slow and has a mis-fire at higher revs. His Subaru dealer said that its a feature of the car, yeah right.
Mark,
We had exactly the same symptoms with our Scooby. It appears that when the car was brought over from Japan to Europe, somehow (when they were re-programming it to meet EU3 standards) someone screwed up. We had the engine management re-programmed with the 'fix' from Subaru and, apparently, the back pressure was now wrong and the exhaust had to be adjusted/changed. We gave up with this and fitted a pukka sports back box instead - even keeps the Subaru warranty!
We were told that all 3,000 Subaru's were affected by this, but suprisingly, only 4 people (when we sent ours in) had complained
about the poor performance and high-rpm misfire!?
The dealer should know about the problem - and it is NOT a feature of the car - I was able to easily keep up with it in my FRP!!
I will pursue this with Subaru UK.

Just spoke to John Sherwood at Subaru UK.
He sais he is unaware of any problem with the MY01 WRX that i told him about. He was aware of the problem with the MY99/00 but said that there was no such problem known to Subaru UK about the misfire at high revs.
I am gettling bl00dy confused here. So dealers are aware and swapping ECUs but Subaru UK are denying it !!!!!

Are International Motors (Subaru UK) covering their ar$es? A re-call is expensive so only fix cars through the dealer network if someone kicks up enough fuss.

Well you would have thought that a call to IM and pressure on my local dealer, involving 2 other dealers that have done the ECU swap would have done it. Oh well, better aim higher.........

rnr - its more like a 'hunting' between 2500-3000 rpm - like someone is cutting the fuel off - then on again quickly.
I must admit mine isnt bad - or I am now used to it and drive around it?
It is not all the time either - just when the weather is a certain type, damp, cold, usually

I thought the problems was higher up the rev range..... misfiring and stuff.
My MY01 pulls nicely from 3000 all the way to 6K.. I don't take more than that. Only done 1.5K on the clock. I expect it to get even better after a few miles and a performance backbox.

Druddle - Any chance of posting a copy of that bulletin from Subaru as I suspect we must have the same problem with our cars, not that I have noticed a proble with mine, at any rev range.

I remember this on my MY00, full power it would kind of hesitate before pulling away again, funny thing is I've only really just remembered it as I have run a LINK ECU for the last 6/12s 12000miles, its only reading this thread that has jolted my memory to its previous existance - would appear to be an ECU problem.
