Default I'm off to see a Scoob!

Good morning everyone.

This afternoon i's off to go and see a MY00 Impreza Wagon Turbo 2000. It's completely standard which is why I'm interested in this one.

The issue I have is that the car has a grinding noise from the rear. I will give more detail on this later after I have driven it.

The guy at the garage said that it is only when the car has warmed up, which puts my first idea of the brakes a little out of the picture, even though I know the rear brakes seize quite commonly.

If anyone has any idea what this could be I would be very grateful.

Thanks for reading this.

I've just test drove the car and it pulled really strong. But I didn't hear the grinding noise, we took it on a 25 mile drive, from cold. I asked him and he said you will only hear it after 40/45 miles.

The brake calipers and pads are brand new and it has had a regular service at Roger Clark motorsport.

Does this information rule anything other than the brakes from the above list.

Thanks again community.

Rear diff? Takes a long time to warm up the oil, but you would expect it to be noisy from cold .. So makes no sense .. Something is warming up and causing that noise ..

I have to say what an awesome dealer to tell you that though .. Most wouldn't say anything... Like the guy who's ****ed me on my current lemon ..

If you didn't here it after 25 miles then I don't think I'd worry about it tbh. Until it actually happens then not much you can do. Use it as a bargaining tool.

Thats what he said 'attention needed to rear grinding noise', I didn't get to drive it and he said you barely hear it even after the 49/45 miles. He said it sounds similar to a loose exhaust hanger, but said he thinks its the drive shaft. it's completely standard, good condition £1500, Apart from the noise.

Top block as stated above for mentioning it though. If he didn't I would be none the wiser as I do 30 miles each way to work.

This sounds like a good dealer .... what other dealer would be as honest? Unless, of course, there is something REALLY SERIOUS and he can say he warned about a noise from the rear. Maybe some banana skins in the diff (I have seen it done!).

If the dealer sells with a known (to the buyer) fault - you have ZERO comeback if anything isn't right .... I have never met a Car Dealer who can be trusted to be honest .... so, I would suspect something underhand.

However, that said, we are talking real pocket money here .... aren't we?? £1,500 - if it tickles your fancy then jump I say!!

If you like it buy it...1500 is peanuts really for a car you really like. That said, get it for less if it has this so called noise. No dramas!

That's not true .. unless he signs a 'sold as seen, tried and approved without guarantee' receipt .. and even then, as a trader they have an obligation in a lot of cases.

Bit strange saying that?

This strange noise could cost him another 1500 to silence

If you're really concerned ask for a 50 mile test drive to see if the noise comes back. Does sound like something is heating up, could be rear brakes maybe (handbrake shoes?) or perhaps a wheel bearing, but I guess it depends on how much you like the car and what other ones are available. Until you hear the noise yourself its really hard to tell.

Personally I wouldn't bother. Plenty of okay ones without the miles out there

Do you feel it's worth 1.5k with this issue?

If not, make him an offer a little lower than you would be happy to pay (cash), if he isn't interested walk away- its not meant to be
