Default Taking the car off the road advice

Hi,

I'm thinking about taking my WRX off the road till around April/May next year as I'm about to start my last year of uni so will need a cheap run around. What do you recommend doing to the car to prepare it? remove the battery etc?

It will be stored in a dry garage till then. Should I fill her up and give it a run and get it up to temp every few weeks?

Make sure you dont park it with the handbake on if being left a while as they can stick

Wouldn be a bad thing to start it now and again, and as for the battery does the car have an alarm? If so do you want it working whilst car is in storage? If not then yea disconnect the battery, as it will retain its charge better being disconnected, at least you can just put the live and earth straps on to start it up every now and again ( providing it aint left too long )

And once car is back out wouldn be a bad thing to give it fresh oil and filter

Will do. It's got the standard sigma alarm but the garage is alarmed + quiet area so should be fine.

Cheers

You really need a battery conditioner if you have access to mains power, as above power it up every few weeks and move it to prevent flat spots

Unless you can drive it on private land every so often, what will you do about insurance for it?

Mine has been of the road for nearly a year now.

I have a C-tek battery conditioner connected - great bit of kit!

I try to start her up every couple of weeks - just make sure you leave some fuel in to allow for this!

Won't be able to have a drive as I will be switching the policy over to my run around. I will have access to the mains though, so I'll try get one of those battery conditioners. Thanks for the tips.

Mine was in storage for 6 months in my garage. The problems you get are as previous posts suggest; Handbrake/brake seizure, 'egging' of tyres, battery conditioning and fuelling/running the engine.

I was lucky enough to have a long enough driveway that I could start her up, bring her to temp, reverse out of the garage then get to the top of the drive and get some speed on and then apply the brakes- clearing the discs/pads. This also helped rotate the tyres so that they didn't have a flat spot. Left the handbrake off as the garage was on the flat. As long as the car was running for 10 mins or so then there was enough charge in the battery to restart it next time (although this will do your battery no favours- a conditioner would be good if electricity is available).

Broke my heart in the end as I didn't get to drive it anyway due to having to sell it. The guy that bought it had to take a chance on it running okay having been stored.

Lets hope your storage is short term only.
