Question

1995 Legacy LSI sedan. Automatic trans.
Started doing this about a month ago. You turn the key and nothing happens. Sometimes it clicks, sometimes it sounds like it briefly tries to turn over. Most of the time the second attempt works fine but occassionally it can take 4-5 turns of the key to get it to do anything. Then starts and runs fine. Doesn't seem to be a weak battery. Had battery and starter tested at Subaru (wanted $444 U.S. for replace of starter) and both tested okay but still leads one to believe the starter is getting a dead spot. Sound familiar to anyone. Thanks for any thoughts.

Typical flat battery symptom, or possibly bad earth. Get your local kwik-fit or whoever to check your battery first.
Hope that helps

Sounds more like the starter motor solenoid is not engaging the starter motor with the flywheel.

Thumbs up

I had already bought a starter from NAPA last week thinking this was the problem. My brother owns the NAPA store so I got a much better price than my dealership was going to hit me for. After fiddling with testing the battery and starter the problem didn't occur again for a few days and I thought maybe just bad cable connection on the battery but now it's doing it again so I think I'll have the starter put on. Thanks for the confirmations. Just needed someone to give me a shove into committing to the starter.
See ya!

very common simptom of a failing battery m8

my old car would make that sound when the battery was going (old BG era legacy)

if the battery is over a couple of years old, it could be gone (on my BG it was only 6 months though )

good luck
