I/C spray going off automatically?

Here's a weird thing. My 2003 Blob STi has manual I/c spray. The other day when I was stranded at side of dual carriageway with a knackered fuel pump, as I tried to turn over the engine, the I/C spray would automatically operate, like 2 or 3 times.*

I'm assured that the i/c spray wasn't part of the ecu but it was happening. Any ideas why?
