Default My p1

After buying my p1 saturday . turns out its knackered. Today i was told i will need a new bottom end on my p1. what would be best to go for? 2.1 forged rebuild or a new 2.5 bottom end. So if any of you guys have had this and could help reply please as im lost in the fog.

Having owned a 2 sti imports i thought the p1 was a safe bet. Turns out needs a clutch and adjustments to the brakes also.as well as engine fixed: ( wanna take the car up to roughly 400 bhp roughly.

What do you guys recommend?

Thats not good news after buying the car. Least you can rebuild a good engine i would be tempted by a 2.1 stroker

Gutted, this happened to my P1 after 8 months of ownership, and it was my first scoob, it did put me off at first but i got it rebuilt by a specialist not by subaru!!!!
Once the engine is done and rebuilt, then you have piece of mind, its a stonking car shove around 350bhp in it, and my god its a beast.
Good luck with it all.

If it was a private sale then the OP doesn't have much of a leg to stand on. Assuming the car was test driven then clearly the OP was happy to buy it. It's quite possible the car has just shat itself out of the blue???

Of course i like the car.. he has offered my 500 as a good will gesture, theres nothing i can do . I just have to find the funds to get her back on the road. Unsure which way to go as i want 350-400 bhp.

You've done well to get £500 out of him if it was a private sale!

In your shoes i would have the 2.1 every day of the week over the 2.5!

If 400 is on the cards then a gearbox would be high on my list.

Well if your going for the 2.5 better budget for a 6 speed as the torque out of that engine will destroy the 5 speed

2.5 will be cheapest option as you should be able to get a bit back for your old engine, 2.5 makes a great fast road engine but you are limited to around 400 / 400, p1 gearbox is pretty strong

£10K for a genuine 400hp in a classic. i think you need to lower your sights a bit. loads of threads on here about getting 400hp out of a classic shape car. basically the only thing of use to you is a shell. nearly everything else needs to be changed.

2.1 stroker - drive in drive out 4 - 5K
six speed drive train £2K plus labour
New ECU 800 - 1500 plus mapping
New brakes 400 - 1000 plus labour
new suspension 500 - 1500 plus labour

As you can see not cheap. allow another £1k for sundries and miscellanous

If i go the 2.1 do i have to put a 6 speed in there? if i want 350bhp isnt it better i go the 2.5? he said 355 bhp and 400lb of torque . but if im gonna blow the 5 speed doing the 2.5 doesnt sound sensible. jay have u experienced this? and big stinks thats serious money which i dont have lol. sounds amazing though. thanks for responding.

Not me personally, but a friend of mine used a 2.5 in his classic and the box stripped a tooth.
You could always go for a new age bottom end,, great engine and will run good power, keep it too 350 ish and the box will be fine, if you really want to go down the 2.1 route keep the power down until you can get a decent box for it then sell on the p1 box to recover a bit of the cost for the 6 speed or ppg, ive stuck a 6 speed in mine as im going forged 2.1 over winter, its not cheap moddin a classic good luck

Hang on pal
You don't need a 2.1 or 2.5 build
Buy a running sti 8 /9 standard low miles engine
£1500.00 and run 380 hp with a quick spooling turbo maybe meth mix to 380
Feel for ya mate

it doesn't matter what route you go down. neither the 2.1 or 2.5 will be cheap. you can run more than 350hp but its the torque that will kill your 5 speed. a six speed conversion is the most sensible option but its another £2k plus the price of a new clutch that will cope. an oem clutch will not cope with 350hp for any length of time.

so if you lower your sights to 300 - 320 your money will go a lot further. reliability costs a lot of money. trust me I have been there.

alternatively stick an STi 5 engine in. Sell it on. Buy a new age car. much better base car to start modding.
