Default Steering rack help....

I have traced a bad handling problem with my newage wagon (04) to what i believe to be a worn steering rack. At first i thought it may have been the column knuckle joints but these don't have any play at all & all the bolts are tight, rack also seems to clunk.
If i get a mate to turn the steering wheel whilst I'm looking at the wheels, i have about 20mm-30mm of play before the wheels move

Is there a difference between wrx & sti racks? Can i replace my current one with either?
From searching on here it would seem that worn racks are not that common?

Any help with this one would be great, cheers.

They change a lot on different years (which I`ve recently realised) I bought a rack from a 2002 bug and the difference seems to be the points where the hoses attach. I`m sorted now but you`re best looking for one from the same years as yours. You can replace with either as long as it`s the same year. What year is yours?

Oh 2004?

Yes mate. The garage thought at first it was track rod ends but under investigation found it was the actual rack (apparently it`s quite rare for them to go) so I sourced a quick rack from someone on here. Unfortunately, as soon as the wheel was turned both seals blew ...cost me ANOTHER £100 on top to get it sorted
