I've seen these kind of designs a lot, tommie look very similar. Might be worth welding up the slip joint for a cheap repair, but I would certainly look at a proper know brand for a replacement long term.

Ps here is some I sold

The guy who's car they are from is a coded welder on the job in on they are 4 into 1 on the up pipe and cannot be put on in one price so reason for slip joints .

I have explained to him he would be better off investing in some of Harvey's problem solved

AFAIK the slip joint it to allow for movement in the manifold, weld it up & it'll probably crack somewhere.
Might be worth stripping & cleaning the joint out, just in case its something like a build up stopping the joint from sealing.

Because of the length of pipe in a header set, slip jointing is one method to reduce the chance of the headers splitting or cracking with continual heat cycling. Unfortunately there are slip joints and slip joints but done properly this is a good reliable system.
If you weld the slip joint up there is an increased risk of the header set splitting prematurely.
It is quite normal for the slip joint to "chuff" when the exhaust system is cold but as it warms up and expands that will stop as the joint seals.
