i was walking past my scoob today and notice how discrete the tow bar looked compared to an old shape near by with a tradtional tow bar.

mine is from BOSAL and i highly recommend it to anyone who wants a tow bar that detaches (can hardly tell its there! ) but doesnt want to pay the LARGE amount the dealers charge!

Whats the price then?

Of course with the Subaru one you get all the electrics that just connect to the connector supplied in the boot

err- cant remember the price! but it was (fitted) a lot cheaper than dealer! (£300ish rings a bell)

Tiggs

ps- electrics? who cares the bloke fitting it did that- im sure he conected it to the car somehow- i would have noticed it snagging if it was connected to another vehicle

Well, I think mine was £250 - as long as you get it fitted when the car is new its much cheaper

My electrics are fitted in the boot - they certainly are not connected to your car as that would make you as bright a spark as me .................... and you clearly are not

times change, you have an old car and im sure in the mid 90's it was £250- i can assure you that if you were to buy one now you'd find it much more than that!!!

and if it doesnt connect to the car what does it connect to?

I still prefered to pay £120 at a tow bar specialist for a non-removable one... okay it doesn't look as nice...
but none of that "Right then I'll just tow the trailer home then,
oh where is the tow bar????, oh flip at home in the garage"

Also it helps out with dosey drivers at round abouts who don't look to see if you have actually gone before driving off.

Leave it in the boot!

why didn't I think of that?!

Besides it helps my wagon look slower and less nickable..

Doesnt fitting a tow bar make it non-standard ie modified which woudl reduce the resale . As a matter of preference when I brought 2nd hand cars I always looked for a sign of a tow bar and walked away if I found any.

I don't think so anymore Chrisp...

Unless of course it is obvious the car has been towing everyday of it's life and very heavy things..

I intend running this car into the ground so resale is currently no problem.. the only problem I'll have is replacing it when it dies.... currently 6years old and approaching 100k... hope to get another 3years and 60k miles at least....

you definitly wouldn't get the price of the tow bar back so would be better removing it and selling it separately.

I had a tow bar fitted to the wifes 5 dr, meant to remove the hitch and forgot. I was shunted in it two days later....no damage, except to the other car. Towbar stays on permanently now !!!

I think you can damage the car is you put a reasonable amount of weight on the tow bar.. strange as I have seen things like Mondeos towing a trailer with another car on..

I believe the nose weight of the trailer should be no more that 75kgs... I only have a trailer tent and an old plant trailer..
If I fill the plant trailer with earth for example and cannot lift the nose of the trailer then I empty some out until I can...
the front of a car is lots more than 75kgs...

so what do you tow?

JGM

PS: As to cornering.. an empty trailer makes for another set of wheels to get sideways...

Thumbs up

I dont tow anything, its was just the old orion came with a tow bar so that damage had already been done I guess. I left it on because it would have left holes and probably a bit safer if soemone ran in the back or a touched a wall reversing etc..

The corner reference was simply a muppet forum thing

Thankfully there is no hole cutting required for the Scooby..

Well none in the visible area.. bumper remains untouched.

JGM

PS: I know the cornering was muppet wise...

What year is your car if you don't mind me asking. I'm looking for a removeable ball towbar for a MY02 STi UK.

Also could you confirm that it is lockable onto the car with a key, and how conspicuous is the electric socket? Also can you confirm that there was no cutting of the bumper at all.

Thanks
Scott

Unhappy

Talking of noseweight - if I have anything near 75Kgs then the rear wheels rub on the rear wheelarches!!! Pathetic!! So I need to run it very light which I would rather not do!

scott,

mines a MY01 wagon- no cutting needed. locks on with a key and when removed you wouldnt notice the socket unless you were looking for it.

JGM it was just echoing a view Pete has always said that if you modify it, it will be worth less . I did once have an orion with a towbar and brought the car and then had to replace parts of the rear suspension because I think it had been towing a caravan. Once bitten and all that . Dont think I can fit on to the RA if I wanted to anyway .

Do they "corner" better with towbars
