which one should i build?i have a p1 with standard heads,sc46 billet,syvecs,6 speeed etc.i have a 2.0 forged at the moment but im planning a bit of an engine project over the winter.which would you build?p.s. i have a closed deck block if i got the 2.1 route

Well Depends what you want really. Fast road car. or Fast Track / Strip car.

If u want something quick on the Road, go with the 2.5

If it's track or Drag then 2.1

Better still go for the best of Both worlds and go 2.35

that being Said with a Blank Cheque you could make a 2.5 Rev like a 2.1

I jumped to 2.5 it was Awesome. I am now dropping to 2.1. If i could afford the 2.35 i would go that route.

From my little knowledge of the subject ive always been under the impression that even forged the recommend power is still only around 450-500 of each but there are 2.1's running some silly powers. I think if you have deep pockets then the 2.5 can produce some huge torque levels.

I would be interested to know and see some graphs of the same supporting mods run on a 2.1 against a 2.5 to see which would hit boost sooner, angle of the curves, which run out of steam etc

Any tuners out there with a couple of graphs of similar supporting mods but same turbo?

2.1 is great to drive,but all depends for what car is it

I'm a fan of the 2.5 but for a fast road car, 2.1s rev better and higher plus are stronger therefore can take more abuse, especially on a cdb.

Here's my dyno on a forged 2.5 with an md321x still on std ported headers.

The man did say he had an EJ20 CDB already.

 

I prefer the lazy torque of the 2.5 and with the 6 speed you already have, you know it'll take it.

 

Are they similar in price to build the bottom end?

 

I running a fully forged 2.5l with AF TD05 20G and its amazing to drive everyday plenty of torque and im still running 5 speed.

 

The 5 speed WILL fail at some point, but at least they are cheap to buy/rebuild.

Leeroy, i'd suggest simply drop in pistons matched to the bores. This way, it's a cheap build and also very easy diy build.

Thing is, how do you drive your car? Assess this and work out what suits your driving style.

 

So you prefer the 2.5 for a road car and the 2.1 for track?

 

Best bit of advise, depends on what you do with the car. If it spend 90% of the time as a road car why build spend the money on the minority and vice versa. The 2.5 is a great block for a road car, loads of low down grunt and if its just the odd track day you will do then I'm sure it will more than able. The limiting fact is the end power goal you are after and even that needs to be addressed as if its not being spanked on the track then why the big power card
None of that is meant to be negative more constructive.

 

Ive got an SC46 on an SCD 2.5 with forged pistons but standard sti rods and crank.... tis a lovely drive on the road but have had to have it conservatively mapped to protect against cracking a liner. (440/410)

If i had to do things again id spend that little bit extra and get the block pinned to stop the liners cracking. That with fully forged internals and the cossie 260kpi studs and youd have a very capable road and track engine.

Ive heard bloody good things about the 2.1 on track, but on the road, theres no replacement for displacement and its associated low down grunt.

 

Not all 2.5s are built equal

 

The 2.5 makes such a nice road car, low down pull is exceptional. In an ideal world I'd get mine converted to closed deck or pinned and the heads uprated to increase rev limit.

 

Hmmmmm ...i think a close friend of yours has already said exactly what Alan has also said matey,a 2.1 stroked block is pound for pound big power king in his opinion and hes 100% certain its the way he is going after much ground work and research into the subject.

Money no object it would be a 2.35,but it is an object so its a done deal for him.
