Default I hate road tax.

It's gonna cost £100 quid for 12 months for my Golf 2.0 TDI.

On top of that I only get 58.9 mpg (combined).

I'd hate to own a turbo car.

I've heard the gov are looking to get rid of road tax and are looking for another way to sting the motorist.
It's because of the amount of zero rated cars on the road now they are losing a fortune. I shudder to think what other way of taxing they will come up with.

I'd be happy for it to be scrapped and a bit more tax added to petrol to sting the gas guzzlers.

It makes more sense to charge per mile. It's not fair that someone who only drives 1000 miles per year pays the same as someone who does 20,000+ miles per year.
It's also unfair that that the road tax can only start from the start of each month. It didn't matter so much years ago but with the current high tax prices losing 2 or 3 weeks by taxing your car mid way through the month is a far bit of money.

I agree that the fairest way is to put it on the cost of the fuel instead; only I'd hate to think what the cost of fuel would end up at. The price goes up enough as it is without them having an excuse

It would be very hard to implement because how does vosa know your milage at tax time? Sure you could tie in with the MOT but who trusts MOT testers much and milage can be clocked. Also what if you fail the MOT? Then does your tax end there and then?

That's why its most likely to end up being added to the fuel tax; that way it's charged for in advance, effectively, without any serious change in the way that side is handled

That's because the government want to take the fun out of motoring and want us all to drive in old lady cars. It's like the modern Trabant.

Yeah. just imagine what would happen if we all switched to electric cars. We would end up with road fuel duty on our household electric bills.
I remember the government pushing us to drive diesel cars. Once the roads were full of them the price of diesel was jacked right up.

They should also charge the VAT before the fuel duty is added. At the moment where paying VAT on tax and product.

I believe all the tax should be on the fuel. That way people with multiple vehicles don't have to pay tax on them all, even though they only do a handful of miles a year! People who do starship miles then also contribute more to the upkeep of the motoring infrastructure.

I agree but one thing i will say is, we already pay enough tax on fuel. Every time the oil price goes up the treasury cash in due to adding vat after the fuel duty and increased product price.
The only way our government know how to generate money is to tax. Try exporting more and importing less !

Stop whining .... it is a voluntary tax!

We don't need to pay it - we can modify our behaviour to avoid the tax ..... I drive a very refined Honda, with neck snapping powerful acceleration, it returns 60mpg and costs diddly squat to run.

I could have bought something silly and pay silly tax and silly amounts of fuel - but, I'm far too clever for that silliness.

You sound proud of the fact that your major "horn" of owning your car is the fact that you pay little tax and probably try your hardest to reach 60mpg.

The day I take this approach when thinking of my car is the day I need to dig a hole and fall in it.

The world has gone mad!

I own two cars and they cost me a good whack of cash..... but I don't give a ****! Think of Harry Enfield and "loadsamoney".

I think the tax should be added to fuel, and insurance also
That way the further you drive the more you pay
Also the more powerful cars that use more fuel will pay more
I therefore would save money
My 500bhp scooby does 3500 miles a year
My wifes 320r does 4000 miles a year
Happy days for me

Nobody says "I want a turbo car", then someone else says "Do you want a diesel or a petrol?".

If someone wants a diesel they say a diesel, and unless they want sometime out of a canal barge they get one with a turbo since all good modern diesals make use of turbos.

Erm no. A TDI is a turbo'd car regardless of what you say. It has a turbo does it not? So it's a tirno'd car. Very simple really, all you have to do is admit you should have said 'performance turbo' car. Maybe you only consider turbos to be associated with petrol but I hazard many others don't

More like you are far too old for a performance car these days, plus you never drove fast enough to warrant one in the first place!

This is backed up by the fact that you believe a Honda diesel is powerful and offers performance
