Default oil filter confusion

Guys i need your help again. I bought an oil filter and fuel filter for my sti type uk 03 plate from opie oils delivered today. I had asked my mate to get a sump plug washer from the subaru dealer as opie didnt do them . Anyway he turned up with a washer and a filter, only problem is the original subaru filter is really tiny and the opie one is a lot fatter and heavier. The fitting looks different as well the subaru one dips in the middle towards the thread the opie one bows out towards the thread .
The opie one is UFI 2325900, the subaru one is15208AA12A (i think thats the part number)
Which one would be right if both which is the best to use? the original subaru one looks like a small flask top !!!
Help please as i dont want to use the wrong one.
cheers

hi mate, the filter given on opie oils web site is 15208AA12A, dont know if they sent you the wrong one, the smaller one can be used but dealers don't stock the larger one iirc, I still buy the larger ones online like this blueprint one

http://www.ebay.co.uk/itm/Subaru-Imp...item414b1deab0

Hope that helps

Out of those two i would use the blue one, i thaught the one that opie oils advertised was this one ; http://www.opieoils.co.uk/c-1573-subaru-filters.aspx

If you want to use a larger filter then I'd go for the blueprint one that i left a link for on here but thats my choice

Being honest the only way you know "how good" the filter is is by cutting them open. and comparing.

Things too look for;

Surface area of filter media - deeper pleates and taller means more surface area
Quality of filter media (thin, easy to tear, fluffy etc). Thicker with tighter weaves is better, but it restricts more, so it needs to be larger ortherwise it opens the bypass valve or tears/bursts the media.

Sealing/location of filter media (no good if if it doesn't seal right at the ends of the canister)

Quality of by-pass valve (this opens at high pressures or when media is overwhlemed)

Quality of anti-drain back flap/gasket (not really needed, but you don't want it blocking flow).

The one from Opie is branded "UFI" not Blueprint, just because they look similar doesn't mean they are the same inside. But as long as the thread itself is the same as well as the location (diametre) of the rubber o-ring, the filter should work. There are lots of different design filters using differnt shapes on the end plate, with different number of holes, different size can and flat o-rings instead of round etc.

I've used both Blueprint (made in Japan), Unipart and Crossland (also made in Japan) in the past with no issues. The genuine Subaru filters shrunk in size.

As the blueprints are larger do you need more than the 4.7 litres?

The Blueprint filter I'm using is small!
I've used the UFI from Opie a few times and they work fine.

The original and best filter is still available from RCM and Advanced Autos, why fit anything else?

I must admit I thought they'd stopped making the black filters.
When I did my last service I bought mine from Import Car Parts, and got a genuine Subaru one but blue.
Also looked on Scoobyparts but they said the black ones weren't being made anymore.

Having checked again today after reading this thread, it looks like the black ones are JDM, and the blue ones are manufactured in Canada - see here:
http://www.scoobyparts.com/cgi/sh000...SUB#aOF_2fGSUB

Checking import car parts it appears they've also expanded their range, stocking red, blue AND a blue print black one at a price of £40, £8.50 or £3.95.

I had a good deal off Advanced Autos then, as they were £14 each including the sump plug washer.

To be honest I am not entirely sure as to the real need for the STi oil filter, is it style over substance?

Its worth noting that the ones with a more protruding thread are better suited to say, oil relocation kits which have a shorter thread,if its being fitted to stock location, the recessed thread one is fine

(speaking from expereince, never have i seen a 6 foot stream of oil shoot high into the air when my oil filter shot off its housing which is next to my headlight, luckily i was looking,if i had turned away when i fired her up,who knows LOL)
