Thanks to Api and Extreme Scoobies
Belated thanks to the lads at APi for sorting out an MOT for me and diagnosing the source of a REALLY annoying rattle/squeak/clunk from the rear of the car which I'd put down to a dodgy boot lid lock. It was, in point of fact, a rear suspension mount that had disintegrated. Always a pleasure to take the Phantom back to it's place of birth so to speak It was nice to hear David describing the car as "a bit special" after going out for a run to the MOT place in it!
Unfortunately APi didn't have any rear top mounts in stock so to save me another 200 odd mile round trip, Paul at Extreme Scoobies sourced some for me and fitted them. You don't see Extreme mentioned so much on this site anymore, but if you're in Kent or Essex and need some work done on your Scooby, give Paul a call!
My car financially raped me this month:
- Tax
- MOT
- 4 new Tyres
- 2 new rear top mounts
BUT took it out for a spin and all was forgiven. As a road car, it just does everything!

Indeed, I've had my cars serviced by Paul at Extreme and Api since I got into Scoobies back in ...... 2004! Eeeek! Time flies, but not as quick as my car!

Well I think people are happy enough to mention when someone does a good job for them, but are perhaps reticent to report when they are unhappy with a service that they have received.
A bit of an English thing I guess, plus the libel laws

With Extreme I'd say it's more likely that Paul just doesn't have time to maintain a presence on here anymore as he runs the whole outfit himself these days!

Extreme built the 2.1 strokered engine in the car I bought. I saw their name on the receipt and googled them as I hadn't heard of them before. Couldn't find any bad comments about them so took a punt. It was a year old when I got it so is now three years old and going strong

Well I took my car to Xtreme scoobies for head-gasket change.
They also did the belts and changed the clutch
Whilst the car was in his care, it "developed" a transmission issue (as previously posted on here) which I continue to drive around to this day. He would neither admit responsibility nor could he sort the problem out.
As the car had about 90 K miles on it, that was me pretty well f*cked.
After about six months, the engine developed an oil pressure light issue. It would not go out on start-up for a good few seconds (again posted about on here). I took it around to Xtreme, but he couldn't diagnose a fault/see a problem. I did suggest that oil-pipe (sump pick-up) failure might be a problem (again posted about on here) as is mentioned in the "Engine lubrication system - trouble in general" section of the workshop manual.
However, I was assured that this "never happened".
Well some time later, with a bit of extra noise on start up, I contact API who picked up the car on a flat-bed.
Diagnosis on strip down -
Big-end on no.4 thrown and ringlands gone on same piston. There was also a fracture noted at the top of the oil in the oil pick-up pipe.
They rebuilt the engine and I have found their service to be very professional by comparison.
When I get time (and funds permit), I will pop up there again an see if they can help out with the transmission issue. No full throttle between 2.5 and 3.5 K in fifth and sixth gear for me.
If I had a crystal ball, I would either have taken the car to API in the first place, or sold the it.
I am sure, as many of you will understand, this sort of thing takes a lot of enjoyment out of owning a Subaru.

Well, happy ending (well ending) to this saga.
After the transmission issues became unbearable, I got API to pick the car up take a look at it. It was running so badly, I couldn't even bear to drive it up there.
They diagnosed the problem as being a faulty clutch and replaced it.
Now I can drive on WOT between 2500 and 3500 RPM without shudder, the harshness above 1500 RPM is gone and I am a happy Scooby owner.
And API didn't charge me to flat-bed the car up there. Top guys!!!!!
Moral of the story - if you are in Essex and want your Scooby sorted, go to API, it's well worth it.
Obviously I am pretty gutted at the way I ended up at this point, but all I can say is that hopefully others can learn from my mistakes.
And once again, thanks David and the guys at API.

You gotta be kiddin' We are close to the North pole and he's at the South Pole.
We had to stop at a Quickfit and fit new tyres on the truck, just to be able to get back......
My calculator flattened its batteries just working out the mileage let alone the cost per mile.....

So sweeping, invoicing, general helping is not driving, therefore they want to sit around. OR make whatever you ask them to do last all day....
Cost price is OK, as we get a job out of it and we find that the service offered of doing the tricky bit brings in work. Quite often the hassle of trying to arrange to get a car here [ or anywhere ] is the crux of whether you get the job or not. And the rescue services will have fulfilled their obligation by ' getting you home ' so the option to move it where it can be repaired is lost.
