Could be a leaky injector. Dripping some fuel into the cylinder after the engines turned off causing it to be over rich on start up.

Mine stinks or unburnt fuel on a cold start, but it is fine once the cat warms up.

The cat is there to catalyse the unburned fuel (reduce Hydrocarbon emissions) so while cold and running on enrichment it is normal to get this smell.
