Importance of Servicing
I had a few spare minutes so I have just changed the Air Filter Element and Fuel filter. I have attached photo's below of petrol from the filter and dirty side of the filter. I have just bought my bugeye subaru and it seems evident that the previous owner was more interested in buying alloy wheels than carrying out the basic's. Next on the list is spark plugs and full system exhaust with 200 cell cat. As the center section and down pipe are rotten.
Not much to this post other than to point out the importance of servicing.

Looks like they were both doing their job!
The air filter certainly is dirty and as the replacement interval is 30k for both filters, they could well be at the far end of their life!
Most on here replace these items well before the service life as they also tend to do with the oil/filter, plugs, transmission fluids etc.
Get the oils/fluids etc changed and enjoy!

Afraid this does seem to be a common Subaru owner failing
I've just purchased my second impreza (2001 bugeye ) and yet again I've got to do the basics because the last owner either couldn't afford to or couldn't be bothered
, was a bargain so can't complain
I think because they can be had for a bargain price some folks think they can be run at a bargain price
They can't !

Cheers John D and ToneH for the replies.
I have had a few performance cars, e46 m3's/ evo 8 fq 300, and it seems to be common practice to neglect the basics. I'm sure there would be less head gasket problems if the standard vehicle was kept standard and maintained.
I say standard, wheres the fun in that, i'm all for modifying to be honest.

Yeah true and also less people posting on forums saying , please help my car feels sluggish lol
I'm not a snob by any stretch but if you can't afford to run a car standard you've got no chance when it's modded
Even more so with scoobys , evo,s and the like
They guy I got mine off was goin on about he's put this exhaust and that dv , and carbon bits
Never mind the fact it ran like a bag of bob
Needed belt , pads , clutch , shocks all round
Looked good sat on his driveway though ,lol

Thats not a dirty air filter!!
This is a dirty air filter!!
Looks ok doesn`t it??
This is intake side.
This is air side.
And close up.
Mine get serviced on the calender now not on the miles, unlike the last owners who can`t have ever serviced it, just glad I had a replacement forged engine for her, as I`d be slightly worried otherwise.

That is dirty, hardcore neglect has taken place.
Through the pollen filter away the other day, a few dead flies attached.
The pollen filter lies behind the glove box. A few screws to take the glove box out. Once out the way you will see a white box with a flap on the front. Its inside there.

I've seen worse air filters.
Fuel filter is nothing new....it annoys the hell out of me the amount of people who blow money on fitting uprated fuel pumps on their scoob yet totally neglect to change the fuel filter at the same time......Makes me what to hit them with a clue hammer shouting "hello? what does a old fuel filter do? Do you reuse an old oil filter after fitting a new oil pump?"
The problem with the word "service" (and less than honourable garages) is that to some people think it means a oil change and a quick check of the brakes. On some cars thats exactly what a service is....but there are loads of other parts that need routine maintanence, some of which not even listed on the schedule.
Cambelt idler pulley bearings for example....not listed anywhere in the scheduled or workshop manuals, but they do wear out and they do need changing as and when that happens.

Too many people buy high performance vehicles and then cant afford to run them. Running costs dont just involve insurance, tax, petrol. It boils my p*ss to be honest.
