Default ecu advice please

Hiya all,

Just had a look at my ecu as im thinking of getting it mapped soon i thought i'd have a look and see what ecu i have, now im pretty good mechanicaly but when it comes to this sort of thing im completely lost.

Now the numbers on my ecu are as follows..

1s
22611 AC 722
A18-000D63 7920

Can anyone tell me anything about this ecu?

i should say its a 98 WRX import, has a VF22 turbo, decat 3" system, and a panel filter otherwise i think standard. What sort of power should this be running, just so i have a rough idea.

Thanks very much, Steve.

What do you want to know about it?

The ECU is the correct one for your car, runs 276bhp as standard according to the factory.

You will either need a daughterboard or an aftermarket ECU to allow a remap. Well worth it though, those cars respond well to a remap. Might be worth thinking about an uprated fuel pump and better intercooler and Y-pipe to support it.

Thanks for the reply.

Just wanted to know if it was the original and if it was mappable and you've answered both of my questions so thanks

Any idea what sort of money we are talking for another ecu or a daughterboard then and a map?

I'm not sure if the car has been mapped before i've bought it as already had the mods on it when i got it, how would i be able to tell if it's already had a daughterboard fittted?

Also is it safe to keep driving with these mods if it hasn't been done?

Thanks again.

daughterboard and map 400-600
not advisable to really hoof it with those mods and no re map. im sure if the up pipe is swapped thats a biggie and should be mapped if swapped.

Best way is to open it up (six screws around the side, get a good fitting screwdriver and put a lot of weight behind it, the screws are threadlocked and round easily), if it is just one board in there then you don't have a daughterboard. Put up pics if you're unsure and we can confirm.

If it does have a daughterboard, it may be a Japanese one or an old Australian/NZ one which nobody in the UK supports... Although the Japanese tuners usually put plaques on the ECU lid so easier to spot.

To check it is not an aftermarket ECU (some aftermarkets get put in the standard casing), look for the JECS part number on the PCB - should say "A19-001 DC1" or similar on the board. Also, check there is a little blue label on the yellow connector that matches the part number on the lid.

Then you can be sure of what you've got!

Here's a pic of inside of my ecu, the screws were easy to undo which may suggest it has been tampered with before but i have no idea.

i guess the fact there is no daughterboard and you can't map this ecu means it is completely as standard so will be running the 276 bhp even with the mods i have? But i must get something sorted to get it mapped to look after the engine and be sure it's not ruining it?

Thanks.

Yep, as you correctly figured out, that ECU looks completely standard.

The decat exhaust will allow the boost to go slightly over target and should yield a few extra bhp, plus of course it releases the burble a bit more too but you will see much bigger gains from a remap.

Yeah im aware of that mate thanks, just wondered what other options there are, ie if i were to come across a secondhand ecu, money is tight at the moment so trying to go down the cheapest route but not sure what that is..

If a secondhand ecu is a good option what should i look out for?

Thanks

Ah right ok then thanks for that, will have to start making some phonecalls by the looks, sounds like its going to be expensive either way.
But better to have it done than have something go wrong.

Cheers

doesnt mater how strong your engine is, wrong map will kill it in miles.

Sorry for bringing this back up again, would it work if i were to buy a second hand ecu the same as mine that had been fitted with a daughterboard already? Could i then fit that to my car and just have to have it mapped??

Thanks again.

In principle you could do that, but you have to be very careful because the vast majority of daughterboards are old school Japanese/Australian daughterboards which nobody in the UK has the ability to map. Make sure before you buy a second hand daughterboard it is definitely the type that a known mapper supports.
