How much does aircon weigh??
#7
Hey thanks for the info mate. Was that a classic or a new age?
I understand the spec c has a lightweight sitcom pump too so probably weighs a bit less. Not really worthwhile for me then.

When you have done it and your sat in traffic during a hot summers day, work out your extra bhp per ton . Even better tell the over heating misses sat next to you about your huge power gain Im sure she will understand seeing the sun is already in her eyes because of the missing passenger sun visor

I wouldn't bother to be honest if car going to be used on road, save far more weight just by removing spare wheel and jack, replace them with an aerosol, if you want to save a bit more then fit some lightweight seats, at least both these mods are easy to change back if you ever sell,

Let's put some numbers to this....
Hawk Spec C is apparently up to 120kg lighter than the regular STi, so if we take the full 120kg, then that's: 1495 - 120 = 1375kg.
* So with A/C still in place: 316bhp/1.375 = 230bhp per metric ton.
* And if we're extremely generous with the A/C and say it weighs 30kg!!!, then: 316/1.345 = 235bhp/metric ton.
So, a maximum of circa 5bhp per metric ton difference!
Is it worth it? I'll wager you won't even notice... Surely more value in keeping the A/C to combat hot days, no?

You are all right of course, 16kg of aircon on its own will never make a noticeable difference, it has to be part of a concerted effort to save weight.
The 2006 spec c weighs 1390kg. The difference of just over 100kg versus the standard European spec Sti is pretty noticeable. I figure another 70-80kg would be pretty doable:
Spare and jack: 15kg
Coilovers: 10kg
Lightweight 17" wheels: 10kg
Milltek exhaust: 10kg
Aircon: 15kg
Lightweight seats: 20kg
I dunno, maybe it's not really worth it, it's such a frickin awesome car as it is :-)

I'm fairly lean so don't think I could save too much weight there.
I always insist that female passengers remove their clothing before entering the vehicle though, usually saves a kilo or two ;-)

You seen the mess slugs make!
Seriously though,
When i reshell my legacy, the AC is definately coming out .... not just for weight (the legacy system is a reet chunky monkey) buit also to free up space for additional stuff like swirl pot, pressure reg, catch tank, etc.
Air con is nice, but im a tight git and hate using it .... i only used it twice through all last year! so its coming out!
