Default what engine

Hi,
I have a 2002 wrx bugeye. Was running fine with no noises smoke or anything, pulled up last night, heard a knocking pulled boner as I opened it the engine give a screech and died...
Not tried to start it or anything so not to cause more damage (if that's poss ).

Question is:
What engine do I need as keep seeing names like short block, long block, ej and so on.
Would an sti engine fit with no issues, would I need anything extra or different?

Many thanks in advance

get a proper rebuild by a reputable tuner. Give them the budget and take there advise, second hand is just that, you could end up back to square one again.
