you will lose the flat four rumble but might gain a bit of torque

you could get an unequal length one , keep the flat four burble, get a matching up pipe and a remap and you will probably get much better spool and response

Go with an Un-equal one chap.

The traditional "Subaru" exhaust note is still there but it is slightly different in my experience. It's hard to explain really, the sound is higher pitched and screams at full chat if that makes sense. More like a sports bike I suppose.
My car burbles like any other Impreza at tick over and cruising speed but really open it up and it sounds amazing. I'm using Laterals GT Spec manifold and up-pipe.
I also noticed a decent increase in torque which is ofcourse very good. After checking dyno prints we found that my 20G combined with the S/S manifold and up-pipe actually spooled earlier than my VF28 with OE manifold and up-pipe.

Ok matt that sounds good, I'm going for decat up, decat down, vf34 turbo. Sti injectors, cosworth panel filter, been told to expect around 350. Just wondered what difference a manifold would make. Is yours equal length or just stainless??

Mine is a un-equal stainless steel one with stainless steel up-pipe.

Equal length manifolds can sound quite awesome but most people go for unequal length stainless ones and that's what I've got. It still makes a burble but once you open it up you lose some of that and it sounds much better then the sound you get from OE headers.

Forget Tubular at that power level you'll lose spool, get a set of Harvey Smith ported Headers with one of his up-pipes matched to your turbo spec. I swapped to these and gained over 500 rpm of spool and 30 BHP.
Now running 440 on Harvey's ported headers.

I fitted equal length to my last classic, and although the mapper said it was a good torque increase I missed the burble
Depends what you want really, as on full boost it did have a lovely sound, but not a subaru noise

I ask my friend about this and said far better to get the OEM equal length header from a jap Sti than an aftermarket copy.

Not sure if he's right but usauly trust his judgement on all things scooby

standard headers and up pipe ported is the way to go unless you are aiming for over 400bhp then you will be better with s/s headers

Completely agree there and I was going to go with ported headers but as I am at 420bhp I'm glad I didn't. I was advised to get tubular headers for the power I was after and that was right, up to 400bhp ported are fine and they do a good job
