Replacing Scooby With a Ford Mondeoa TDCI ST
After owning my STI V5 MY99 for over four and a half years I am thinking of replacing my car for a diesel. I've recently started a relationship with a very attractive young lady, who lives a hour and a half away but the fuel is crippling me.
I know there won't be many fast diesel cars which will as fast as my scoob but I was looking at the ford mondeo 2.2(155BHP) TDCI ST. Have any of you fellow scooby owners owned this car.
I do have a love affair with my scoob but the rear arches need a lot of attention and the money needed could be better spent on replacing the car for a better mpg. Silly question but is it hard to get use to the lack of of power in the ford.

dont get a ford ur regret it mate seriously ford stands for fix or repair daily or found on road dead , ur better of just getting a cheap run around for long drives and keeping the scoob for fun and fix it

You need to get in the real world - the quickest route to find yourself stuck on the hard shoulder is to buy a car from th VW group

Excellent cars, my brother has one.......its has the bluefin software so bhp is 180 is and torque is 310 ftlb
The car shifts! so much instant power, overtaking is effortless and when you get on the motorway you could be doing over 100mph and not even know it.
Now my classic Impreza is 290bhp, in the real world with bad condition roads, traffic lights everywhere the Mondeo St TDCI will keep up easily.
its made me think about swapping more then once!

Disagree with the above comment, the Mondeo has so much torque its all very usable power on the road, you also dont feel like your going fast so it can be quite deceptive.
Agreed a 290bhp Impreza is a quicker car but you would only really know on a nice stretch of road which is few and far between these days.

where i used to work had a couple of 130 tdci's, surprisingly quick, 100mph felt like 80! once rolling i'd expect to keep up with an average driver in an impreza in real world fast sensible driving.

I was going out with a girl i met in Newquay once, she lived in Margate and i lived in London, the petrol was a fair bit but nothing compared to having my Subaru by my side. I lost interest in her as nice as she was.
Diesels are absolute rubbish anyway, not only do they sound horrible, they become powerless at around 5000 RPM and most the power is low down. Petrol for the win.
Selling up for a girl, forget that mang!
Thanks
Sam

Ive got a mondeo 130 bhp tdci 6 speed that i use for work. with all tools in the boot its comfortable and handles well has plenty of power when needed and when driven at 65mph on a motorway returns just under 60 mpg.
A friend of mine had a chipped st tdci, his brother had a honda accord type R the st used to slaughter the type R i personally think the mondeo is a very underrated car but only due to its company rep image

I did a similar thing for a girl. Had a Subaru in the past at 18 (only just able to afford to run it working 6 days a week). She lived 30 miles away and I saw her after work. Sold it and got my dad's Xantia 1.9 diesel which was... admittedly cheaper.
Then we split up 2 months later . Lesson learnt.

Keep the scoob - you'll only regret it! In 1999 (Boxing day as luck would have it) I totalled my first scoob (1998 UK2000). Cutting a long story short, it was a company car but the only Subaru in a fleet of Fords and Vauxhalls so they gave me an ST24 instead. Guess I should have been happy as it was a decent car for the era but felt like driving a combine harvester compared to the scoob. I fretted for a while and then opted out of the company car scheme and hey presto, here I am 9 scoobs later!
Don't buy into all of this 'it's got huge diesel torque' stuff - a bus has got huge torque but is fairly crap to drive
