Default Newage STI TMIC - Max Power?

I have a 2006 2.5L STI with the standard TMIC.

I'd like to know what BHP and Torque I can get with the standard TMIC in place, any ideas?

I know the Type 25 got around 415 with the TMIC, is that the limit?

Let's assume something like an SC46 with appropriate supporting mods.

You won't get the best out of that turbo with the TMIC.

It's not really about the most bhp that can be produced on a given intercooler as the effectiveness of the intercooler at dissipating heat at a given power level, as when you're driving a car on the road, you'll be in situations where you'll want to use boost nearly continuously, not just for a quick squirt, which tends to be how power runs are conducted. Its under the former conditions where the effectiveness of an intercooler is really tested.

IIRC The CS400 used the TMIC and reviewers reported discernable drop offs in power with sustained boost and pointed the finger at the intercooler not being man enough..... whether that's true or not I couldn't say!

As Shaun said they can run in excess of 400 Bhp (as mine did) but if you're considering running a SC46 then it would be wise (and safer) to save up for a decent FMIC.

Heat soak on the standard TMIC can result in some alarming charge temperatures in hot weather or when sitting in traffic

Thanks for the replies.

I've no doubt that an FMIC would be better but it's not possible to run an FMIC over here in Switzerland.

That's why I'm interested to see just how far the OE TMIC can be pushed.

400bhp seems not to be a problem. Do I hear 450? :-)

Greek tuning company Auto Ergonomics had 475 bhp out of a newage sti on the standard top mount. They used a lot of cooling mods though, this included water injection, water spray and uprated cooling system. The car was deemd very reliable with this set up and covered lots of miles. Note this was in Mediterranean heat too! It was definitely an eye opener.

How come? Seem odd that you modify the cars turbo but not intercooler?

Any modifying is pretty tricky over here - Turbo is generally ok but the FMIC is a no-go due to fears about pedestrian crash safety.

I know. But I still don't understand their road/car laws. Very odd.

So you could add 50% power to a car no problem, but you can't add something to help keep it running cool?

It's not that simple - adding anything more than 20% more power is quite a process involving various stringent tests to make sure it's all still "safe".

But in general anything that might hit a pedestrian is really tricky, which is why I have to stay on the TMIC.

I was running about 450bhp on my 2005 STi top mount with a Lateral Performance MD321T+ without any problems and no other cooling mods except an uprated thermostat.
I don't know the exact power but it was faster than a blob spec C with a proven 435bhp

Don't know what spec the pistons in Swiss 2.5 STI's are but they will be your limiting factor I would say unless you have modded the engine.

Personally I would say 400bhp max on standard TMIC. Andy F or Harvey would be the men to ask.

Thanks mate, that's exactly the sort of info I was looking for. What sort of exhaust were you running out of interest?

I assume this was on a fully forged 2.5?

I was running a full 3 inch decat system with rotated up pipe and downpipe also GT spec 2 headers (which would cause you some problems I would expect)

Other mods were
800cc injectors
custom cold air intake situated in the inner wing
MD321T+
Remap to 1.8 bar on Tesco's 99
NGK PFR7B plugs
no dumpvalve fitted

That was on a standard 2005 STI engine.

I had a mishap with that engine when the tip came off one of the spark plugs wrecking the head and scoring the bore.

I then borrowed a mates spare engine to get me to the Ring which was a standard 2002 Bug Spec C engine with ported heads which along with my intake system caused Mr Forrest some trouble limiting the boost as the engine was breathing too well and creeping due to the wastegate not being big enough therefor I had to feather the throttle in 5th and 6th gears

A wee vid of it on the ring (sorry bout the GPS not working)

and fastest lap

sorry bout being a vid *****

^^^ 2.0 or 2.5 though? I'm thinking 2005 was still 2.0....

Best time was 8:38ish Bridge to gantry and was on my 11th ever lap of the ring (don't have a PS3 or the likes for learning the corners )

Looking forward to heading back in either May or September again

you can run 800bhp on a top mount if you want, doesn't mean its the most efficeint for the job.

while its a bit dependant model on model (depending on airflow, body shape etc etc) 300+ and front mounts start to show an improvement over top mounts (higher you go the better the gain), so its at what point do you say enough is enough and sack it off.
