Default used car haggle

Hi Folks,

What does the average buyer expect to be able to haggle off the price of a used car (advertised @ circa 7k)??? ..on average (appreciate all sellers are different).
I think things have moved on since i last bought a used car...

Depends on condition (tyres, brakes etc), and what you'll get trade in value for your own car if your going down that route. Definately make sure that one in the link has had a cambelt change, if not get them to do it or knock £500 off to get it done.

Its all down to what else is out there.

If you can find a same spec car that is similar mileage and age by a trade seller in autotrader that is cheaper. You use that price as a gauge/leverage to haggle down the price of teh car you are looking at.

If its a privately sold car, you should try and haggle BELOW that trader price as a private seller doesn't have the overheads or legal responsibilty that a trader does.

If its a home-based trader with no proper premises/forecourt - apply the same rule.

If its an independant dealer forecourt, aim to match it to the price you have found elsewhere.

If its a Subaru dealer, aim to get close to it by a few hundred quid. If you can get a price of another same spec/same condition Subaru from another Subaru dealer that is cheaper - try to match it.

At main dealers most people just pay the price shown but as you say it,s a buyers market and you are entitled to make an offer. There are so many for sale you get yourself a good deal i,m sure...

That looks a fair price to me,but if you have nothing to trade,I would want at least £500 off sticker price

I always stick to private sales, as you can always get a better price through negotiating. I got £800 off my STi this year through haggling. My brothers are pro's at it and have managed to get thousands knocked off in the past.

Remember to be persistant and don't let your pride get in the way of haggling a good deal.
