360hp out of a classic low miles wrx
Hi fella's
I have decided to modify my mint 96 wrx, it's been very well looked after, only been in the country 3 yrs, was waxoyled when it arrived.
It's going to be a Sunday car, no more than say 2500 miles a year.
I'm at a point where I can't decide on spec, I'd like it to have some good grunt but also don't want it completely blowing up. Before anyone says get an sti, no thanks, I spent ages and ages finding this minter and saw so many dog sti's, I'm fond of this one.
Will the 96 wrx bottom end manage 360hp? I'll swap the box to a 754 and hopefully it will last as Im quite mechanically sympathetic.
So guess I need a 18g? Fmic, 550's, clutch? Simtec or will mafless esl do?
I've already got; walbro, fpr, PE equal manifold, 5ziegen 3" system and 3" downpipe, his filter.
Thanks for any help as I can't decide whether to do this or just manage at 300-320ish spec( how quick are they at this level?) but think I'd wished I'd got it up to 360!

sounds like a good plan, I'm also doing the same, currently gathering parts...
if your budget can stretch a sc36 billet turbo would be better than a td05 18g...
Saying that i have a td0518g ready..

mine was 320 bhp, which is fecking quick, but u'll soon get use to it an want more power, so might as well buy the bigger turbo an injectors etc etc now rather then changing it all again,
an im not just saying that coz i have a new un used md321h turbo for sale

Put it this way, they use to rebuild the classic engines for big power at around the 320/330bhp mark and you wish to run 360bhp on standard internals?
Personally I wouldnt want to run 360bhp on a classics internals, seen them pop at just over 300bhp on a good engine, just let go, nice hole in the block, oil all over the place.
The odd one lives a little longer above 350bhp but are you willing to take the risk of engine failure (it normally means piston through the block as the rods break), remembering your car is 15 years old, has a 15 year old oil pump in there (ones that seem to be a little tempremental and stick), or just go for a nice 330bhp and upgrade other parts?

This is why I posted, to get feedback, if you think it is too much realistically I may have to go for lower power 300-320 with an ra box? So it feels nice and quick to drive, good idea?

Strip it out so it's as light as possible. All sound proofing, rear seats, spare wheel, carpets, air con etc etc.
A lightweight 300bhp with close ratio box will be a hoot to drive. Just be sure to sort the handling and stopping out. These two things in my opinion are more important than power.

i would would still do it, to test it'll last at 360 bhp (ive seen some last a long time if looked after) but just keep in mind it'll go bang some time, just keep putting money aside for when it does.
