Cost of track days

What is the real cost of a track day?
I'm looking at going to my first one in June but have been put off after a mate of mine had to spend £2000 sorting out his TVR afterwards. I'm assuming my MY02 STi will be cheaper than this. Any experiences/costs?
What about insurance?

I've done probably a dozen or so track days in assorted cars - Scoob, Elise, Caterham, TVR... - and the extra cost has not really been noticeable. I guess you probably do the equivalent of a few thousand miles of "normal" driving, but it depends how you drive! There are plenty of stories about people getting through a whole set of pads in a day, a whole set of tyres, warping disks etc. And that's without blowing engines or stuffing the car into the armco.
Insurance for track days seems to be pretty limited to Eggar Lawson, unless your road policy covers you. From about £55 upwards.

I worked this out last year and if I recall it was £350 - £400. This includes cost of track day, insurance, pads, discs, tyres, fuel, oils, etc. etc.
Scary.
