Multi-storey car parks And Diff???

Default Multi-storey car parks And Diff???

Was pissing about with the diff settings (still dont know what all the settings achieve) on my 54 STi, and had it set to the rear and forgot i hadnt placed it back in auto. Anyway was parking in a multi-storey and ever time i turned into a ramp to go up it there would be a 'cracking' noise which sounded like it was coming from the rear of the car when i got to the top of each ramp and turned again then the cracking noise sounded again. Now i know people has said about the cracking noise when reversing or pulling away slowly and this was due to the diff, but should i get this going up a ramp in a car park?

It's about how much steering lock you have applied. If the DCCD is set to 'open' you shouldn't get any noise. Put it back in auto and try again.

I always put mine fully back (green) when going slow (reversing or parking) it makes no noise then but if it's left it 'auto' it sounds broken when doing the same moves and worries the wife lol!

If it sounds a bit like a driveshaft popping out its normal, I've done it myself and thought I'd broken it, lol.

Leave it on green all the way rolled back, more fun, mine felt better like that anyway.

does any one know how much % of power is transferred to the rear wheels with the DCCD all the way back?
is it 100% rear wheel drive?

Depends on the year and model , not 100% rear wheel drive, mostly 70/30 60/40 mine becomes very tail happy, wich i love, and yes can give you a fright when it clunks, sounds horrid but normal.

not too sure mate, dont think its as aggressive as the older type r and ra's maybe 60/40 im sure someone will correct me in a minute lol

I've got a 55reg STI with DCCD and with it rolled right back into open doing any sort of parking it clunks and bangs which doesnt sound good!

The only way to stop it is by putting it into Auto.
Wierd as I would have thought all the way open it shouldn't do it??

Mine is the opposite mate.

when left in auto it judders when reversing with steering lock on.

I think this is normal

I have seemed to have pleased both sides of the fence on this one as alot of ppl who dont like graphics or rally decals seem to like it, and those who do like graphics and decals appreciate something different. I know its not to everyones taste but its mad the number of comments it attracts.

I thought the idea of the auto setting is to release/lock/adjust the diff to allow whatever side wheel to turn faster/slower as and when it is required?

Whereas in manual on full open it is still fixed to a certain degree?



I read the thread ages ago on how it works but it took me 2 hours and i got really bored!!

Its really a complicated system, people without dccd never seem to get any knocking or banging!?

Would like to find out a definite answer on this

either set the wheel all the way back and flick the switch to on or pull the handbrake up slightly so the brake light is lit on the dash, this also puts it into free diff.

I saw that thread too but I don't really get it either if i'm honest. I'd like someone to say what each setting does and when it should ideally be used (like the Evo has the gravel, tarmac settings etc). I read one review of my STI and it was shouting about how great an advantage the DCCD is and that it was a surprising feature on a £26k car. I've not yet really seen the point, it's just a PIA when moving slowly and clunking away!

It may be harmless but it sounds crap when it happens and passers buy see a lovely Scoob

but must think its dropping to bits with the noises coming out of it!!!

I think I need to get my Loud exhaust on then they'll not be able to hear it!

Glad to hear its the norm then, i thought the bearings on the rear wheels all decided to fail at the same time when i heard it. But what is actually making the noise then, it sounds awful

I'd say the easiest way to explain it would be, If you imagine the diff in a fixed position as in at the end of each driveshaft there is a cog and when turning in a circle the inside wheel does not travel as far as the outside wheel resulting in something that sounds like a cog/driveshaft slipping, not sure if it's technically correct but you get the idea
