I think that the new shape is uglier and isn't the new version everyone was hoping for.
Inside and out it's a disappointment compared to late STi or P1.
They should improved the interior layout/quality.
Most non Scooby owners agreee its uglier too.
Saying that when the prices come down I may be tempted in blue/black import Sti at 15K to replace my Sti V5.

Just remember why did MY01 owners buy an MY01 maybe due to the cult status and reputation of the classic shape and that fact that it won most of the magazine group tests it went in. You cant have it both ways . Mind due its human nature to justify your decisions .
If they could knock 200kgs off or give me 400bhp then I could get the lights, spoiler etc changed. Even now I still cant quite believe that the new shape didnt have 250bhp as standard to offset the extra weight.
IMHO the impreza wasnt suppose to be pretty is suppose to have a raw edge rally car look and the new shape is just too soft in the looks department for my liking. Without the scoop it could just be any other family saloon/estate.
I agree things move on but as another example looks wise I would have an F355 before a 360 Modena.
Just my opinion

Old one, definately....it's lost that raw unpolished "edge" nowadays. Which is just why I bought it in the first place...if comfort and a silent ride was an issue I would've kept my Volvo 960.
But as someone already said...with some small mods they don't look that bad.

I perfer the old shape but now I;ve seen a UK300 and STi7 in the flesh there is not much in it. The new shape is more imposing whilst the old shape is more discreet and subtle but looks more focussed.

At first look a bit over a year ago I didn't like the new shape
at all. But it has grown on me. In fact so much that I have ordered
a MY02 to replace my "old and dated" MY99.
I used to hate the bug eye lights but now I think they are kind of
cool and original. The way the bug eyes look also depend a lot on
the colour of the car. But the rear spoiler is still kind of odd.

The new one has grown on me a little but I still think the original (MY99 on wards) is better looking. It's got such a raw look. Actally, if you took element of the old and new and stuck them together you'd have one hell of an Impreza

Can I be the first to be corny and say I prefer neither car. Both are excellent and no matter which one you have people still look and stare. People also get out of the way fookin quickly as well when charging up behind them. Not that I've ever tried

Saxo Boy it would not surprise me if you could beat a MY01 at the 1/4 mile. I have no objections to them at all apart from weight, but that is one heavy objection.

For me the old shape wins every time - bugeye lights are now standard on everything from mercs to daewoos and make the new scoobs look far too much like a toyota corolla from the front. I also think the new car is too slab sided and looks 'tall' compared to the old one.
Theres been some nice mods done in the gallery on some new shape cars but to me the original is still the purer car.

haha!! What a load of crap!!
Some of your reasons are just quotes from magazines!!
I have an MY01 cos I could afford one, and I dont want the same shape car as the one boy racers can afford!!

how many "old shape" owners would not do a straight swap for a MY01/02 ? stop kidding yourself - I believe that u are so against the new shape because of the following reasons :-
1. You've already spent so much modding your old model that it would not be financially sound to part with it
2. You can't afford the new model - probably because you're one of those boy-racers driving a 5 grand jap import
3. You've got bad taste and still live in the early 90's

I wanted a nice car. List was as follows: Mitsubishi FTO, Nissan 200SX, or Impreza.
The Impreza was forced onto the list by my other half, but I wasn't convinced. I then drove an RB5 at Heritage Leicester and was bitten. The other two didn't even compare.
So, the decision was made and then an MY01 came up for a reasonable price - less than the RB5. I prefered the style of the MY01 as I think Subaru have tried and successfully made it look more attractive to women. However, how many women have you pulled by driving either of the styles??? Women will always prefer the "sports" cars...... To quote a colleague of my other half, "it looks like an escort with bits on!"
If I had the decision now, it would be an MY01, or a P1/RB5. They are the only "classic" styles I would consider.
Just my opinion.

I've got an MY99 which I love.
Initial thoughts on the MY01 was yuk.
That said, having seen some well sorted MY01s and riden in them, I would have one. Chris L's is probably my favourite MY01 - looks great, sounds lovely and rides / handles very well.

Blaster ....don't think that was the question asked was it ???
The more pertinent question might be how many new shape owners appear to have bought the car for reasons as flimsy and sad as the ones mentioned above ? Stuck in the 90's ? - lol - car snobbery was an 80s phenomenon wasn't it ?
It would be foolish to deny that the new car is much more refined, well built and technically advanced than the old model so there are good reasons to buy one - as I'm sure the majority of people on the board will be fully aware.
A bit of a shame then that some fellow scooby owners purchase criteria seem to extend no further than what can I afford that Joe Bloggs can't. Pleased to say mine involved a bit more reasoned thought than that
Clarebabes - I think you have hit the nail on the head. The new model has been given a more rounded front and pert rear just like most cars of the moment - to appeal to a wider market. The simple fact is the look of the new car has been softened and judging by the overly defensive responses of some owners it appears that this fact may be eating away at their self-image
As the man says ...personal preference - enjoy what you have and dont spout p1sh about other scooby owners.....or their Dads !!

blaster' point is relevant (ish!) everyone cares what ppl think of their choice (to an extent) and there are now a lot of very cheap subaru's around been driven by the sort of sterotype that some ppl would not want to be asscoiated with.
old capri might be have bben good once but i wouldnt drive one now.

Sorry, still don't the like the new model is standard trim.
It "CAN" look brilliant when modded but as standard looks.......well, crap!
The Sti7 looks a lot better(diff lights!) especially in Prodrive uniform.
I still prefer the old classic model.........looks brilliant even it standard trim.
Ps:I don't agree when people say when you put an MY00 next to a MY01 it looks dated.......how?.........the only thing that looks dated is the rear lights..........other than that it makes the MY01 look like it was designed when someone was on the p!$$
But if you personally like it then that's all that counts!
