Default A point in the right direction, and a hello

Hi,

I'm new to this forum, and hope to spend much more time on here if this car is the car for me!

A used 2001 Subaru Impreza WRX Import (bugeye?) is available close to me, for ~£4k. It has:

1 year warranty (big bonus i thought)
49k miles
2 previous owners
and MOT's validating the mileage.

The bodywork is immaculate, and from the short drive I had it seemed to pull well.

Clutch point was half way up, no ticking noises when revved and no juddering on braking.

Insurance is doable (~£1k at 22y/o), and tax is affordable.

My issue is there is no history. It was imported in 2003, but that's all that is known.

Would this be a big issue? I'm really drawn to the price, and it seems very very tidy.

Any help would be appreciated,

George

Welcome

Do you have any link to the sale ?

Bugeye WRX is possibly one of the most unloved of the impreza family and are usually dirt cheap. Imports have a performance advantage but that year of car have pretty crap brakes

£4k seems a bit pricey

As it's got no history it would be worth having the cambelt and tensioners done, so maybe try and get the price down a bit because of that, also worth getting a service of all fluids and spark plugs, for my recent service off the top of my head it cost me as follows:

Cambelt and tensioners £210
Water pump £30
Spark plugs £25
Engine and gear oil £80-100

labour was about £150-200

Where abouts in norfolk are you? i know a good garage in Wymondham who done all the above on my car and were a pleasure to deal with.

Cheers, I wasn't sure how this compared to other deals so I'll be ready to walk away if need be.

I am hoping to get the cambelt done asap if I buy it.

Thanks for the feedback guys. Any thoughts on the advert?

Red Jap Bug WRX.......can't say I've seen many about. It's overpriced but what you are paying for is peace of mind if the warranty is upheld if anything goes wrong.

250 ish BHP for the Jap against 215 BHP for the equivalent UK model with single AVCS on the JAp so it has enough get up and go. Font brakes are 2 pot sliding jobs but should get you by.

Wheels are from an STi as they have slightly divergent spokes and dimples, the exhaust has been changed as it originally came with a twin "peashooter". The radio mast is in the rear screen so it's a rev B bodyshell and the sills have been colour coded.

Apart from that it looks like an almost unmolested car which is unusual, maybe it's because it's red and has not attracted much attention LOL

If you like it, can afford it then it's worth as much as you want to pay for it

in my opinion when you are getting towards this age of car just look at the expensive things first like does the gearbox feel good, clutch not slipping no headgasket or bottom end problems rather than if the bumpers scuffed or anything slightly cosmetic as bumpers etc are easier and cheaper to fix than clutches, gearboxes and diffs.
i would say its slightly overpriced but if the warranty is good then if you can get 4 or 5 hundred of the asking price its not a bad buy as it looks tidy enough and a rare colour.

Thanks for the help everybody. Put the deposit down today
Negotiated a deal whereby the cambelt was done before I pick it up later this week.

Midlife, you definitely know your scoobys. Upon closer inspection the exhaust has STi on the side, and I'm told the warranty covers anything mechanical for the year, so definitely have peace of mind.

every1sgottablue1 (haha), I get the impression its a jap import as theres japanese writing all on the inside door shut, and the indicators are on the right hand side (so weird) - unless regardless it could still be a euro import? The red is a great colour though.

They've done all the work on mine so far, and charge about £35 an hour.

They always phone to let you know if it's going to take a bit longer and if any new parts are going to be needed, rather than just doing and informing you when you get there.

I was going to remind myself if it had a rear wash wipe but the for sale page has gone

If it has then it's deffo from Japland as all Euro cars didn't.

Welcome to the joys of Bug ownership...........I've had mine since 2002

Nice! I think i'll keep this fairly stock for the year whilst I have warranty, but worth a look after that point
