Default So I Bought..... a classic Impreza WRX STI

So guys,

After looking at Evo's and Imprezas, i finally came across a cheap one which has had an enguine rebuild 2000 miles ago and is in immaculate condition (not a mark on it).

It cost me £3800 with 3 months warranty and 12 months MOT.

Spoke to a garage i found amongst the receipt and he said its immaculate but a tad over priced (to be expected with a dealer). He said for the money though you wouldn't find a better classic in that condition. He vouched he did the rebuild and was running extremely well and was shocked that the previous owner part exchanged it for a new STI.

Chuffed to bits with it and picked it up yesterday

Couple of dealer pics:

My girlfriend hates it! And yes i could have got one cheaper private, but after being stung so many times i can't really trust buying a car like this privately. Especially it being an Import.

Enjoy! I will get some new pics when i get chance! Oh and i love this car! Never had a Jap car... always been a ford boy. I tell you what! I won't be going back!

Thanks,

Shep.

Someone mentioned to me about piston 3 and parallel fuel lines.

WRX STi Version III -- albeit with a v.6 wing, bonnet vent meshes painted white, side/rear skirt end caps, full crystal lights conversion and de-tango'd indicators/repeaters.

Very clean looking example and stuff. Nice!

(And the best colour on a Classic too ).

The world's your oyster when modding an Impreza - you need to give a budget.

But the classic [pun lol] cost effective "stage 1" is:-

K&N or Green replacement panel air filter - £40
Walbro 255 fuel pump - £70
NGK PFR7B plugs - £30
Decat downpipe - £80 2nd hand
Simtek ECU + remap - £1074. Jolly Green Monster can supply fit and remap at a location of your choice - even on the roads near where you live!

Should see 320+ and similar lb ft of torque. A decent c.16% increase over the stock 276bhp. But also much nicer driveability/throttle response, etc.

Hello mate

Spoke to you via OCUK

You'll get some great advice and help on here

Think I said about the fuel and piston 3 melting. It's my understanding that some engine failures are due to booting the car with low fuel - making piston 3 run lean and let go - pretty sure thats right but happy to be corrected. Either do the parallel mod or don't let the fuel gauge go under 1/4 of a tank.

Cheers Joz. I was wondering though if there were any changes, mods i should look at doing before i carry on driving.

I know its not the same but on my Escort RS Turbo people said it was best to remove the ABS as it was terrible and was dangerous. I removed it and it improved the car a hell of alot!

Not suggesting removing the ABS but just wondered if there are some quick, cheap mods people recommend doing to prolong the life of the car etc.

Do you have a detailed receipt for the engine build?

Who knows, it might have been rebuilt with 500+ bhp-capable fully forged internals - hmmmmmmmmmmn....

Yeah, there's an issue with the self proportioning valve. If you lower it, it doesn't compensate - thinks you have a heavy load on board - and as such, it ends up locking up easily. Or something like that.

No such issue on the Impreza I don't think.

Before parting with your cash get it on a dyno for a health check to make sure it's ok (fuelling, boost, sensors all working properly etc).

If you want to prolong the life of the car keep it well serviced.

Erm it was done by NKS Performance in Wrexam in November 2010. Just a standard rebuild according to the receipt. I spoke to Kalvin/Calvin there and he told me all about the car and was very pleasant to deal with. He said it was very clean and the previous owner (Arran) was mad for selling it.

Only problem i have with it is that even though its had a new gear box, 5th gear crunches when going up from 4th. 3rd gear crunches when going down from 4th and reverse crunches. They don't crunch all of the time but i would say 75% of the time they do. That is the reason i managed to get £700 off the asking price.

I shall be booking it in with ScoobyTechnix in Fleetwood next week hopefully for a health check and see what it comes back with. I have 3months warranty with Graham Walker LTD. in Chester so i imagine if there are faults with the car that need sorting then the guys there should pay for them to be rectified. Obviously they won't pay for any optional upgrades i want but they should honour my warranty if there are genuine problems with the car.

sepcobain, follow this advice ^^^

Oh, and before you even attempt an oil/filter change, then first search "oil change" (or similar keywords), and drink in what you read.......
