Default 450 miles, off boost!!

MPG generally bothers me not in my WRX wagon.. but tomorrow we're taking it 450 miles from Newcastle to Cornwall for two weeks.. so, we're leaving at midnight to avoid traffic and following our friends in a beemer 520d.. we're sticking to 70-75mph all the way..

what'll I get out of a tank????? anyone know what size tank my car has? Be interesting to see what these cars will do off boost..

Morning!!

Maybe it'll draw others into an MPG discussion and a chance to chat about what they've achieved?

That's what I'm hoping for.. be nice to show these wagons are practical and can do a bit of distance without a refuel every 180 miles!

Careful driving to work 30 mile round trips got me 350 miles before the warning light came on. I reckon it would be possible to get 400 if you drive about 60mph constant but it depends how quick you wanna get there!

Brought mine 800 miles to near Limoges at the end of May, driving steadily all the way, mostly through the night.

The car was two up, but was carrying so much stuff I had to take the rear seat back out: a worktop cut into two pieces, FIVE full kitchen units in flatpack, plus an extra pair of doors, a kitchen sink, sundry other bits and bobs plus luggage for two, and food like coffee which is horribly expensive here.

Got 28 mpg over the journey. That's from a 2.5 running 400/400

If MPG worries you in the slightest, you're driving the wrong car.

Taking you're time you should easily see just over 300 miles out of a full tank, I took my time going up to Japfest 2 last year and didnt go over 65mph, I was pretty happy.

I've had 330 out of mine, I filled it up as soon as the light flashed so it would have gone a bit further. Even driving normally i get 27-30 mgp out of my WRX and average about 300 miles for each fill up. Even when i did the Highland Fling this year i had 26 mpg out of it which was a suprise as we occasionally 'drove in a spirited manner'.

Best i've had was leeds to aberdeen, 2 adults 3 kids and a boot full of luggage. that was average family driving. Got just outside the city centre before i filled up as i was pretty much running on hopes and prayers by then. not far shy of 400 miles. fair bit of 40 and 50mph in that though due to roadworks. Normaly get 200 to 240 local trips depending on the weather

Well i've had just over 300 miles to a tank out of my bug wrx and that was 50/50 motorway and town so I was pretty chuffed with that. Usually it's between 20 and 28mpg though. I think on a long run like yours 320 miles should be relatively easy :-)

60l tank, fuel light comes on when 10l remains, which in reality means about 35/40 miles of driving left.

Had 320 out of the classic before on a 29mpg run. Currently hoping to take advantage of the school holidays and rack up 30mpg from 50 litres.

Handy info thanks.. so lets say 60 litres of fuel..

300 miles = 22 mpg

330 miles = 25 mpg

350 miles = 26.5 mpg

380 miles = 28.7 mpg

400 miles = 30 mpg

and "no chance" territory 430 miles = 32.5 mpg

travelling 450 miles so to cover that without a refuel I'd need to do 34 mpg!!

noooo fooking chance...

I've just done Durham to York to Lancaster and back to Durham which was exactly 320 miles and the light never came on. Filled up and worked out at just over 29mpg which I was happy with

My JDM Hawkeye (400bhp) returned 26mpg on a steady motorway run to and from TOTB (280mile round trip). Sticking to circa 80mph.

To get 30mpg I would of had to of driven like a 100yr old Vicar. At which point I would rather cut my *** off with a rusty butter knife.

If you wanted any chance at getting 450 miles out of that, I would sit at anywhere between 55 - 60mph no more. Keep it off boost as much as possible (in a classic thats 2/2.5k rpm). Coast in gear when slowing (engine breaking). Tyres will need to be fully inflated, or as hard as you can get away with (has to be safe, the max ive done is 36psi front and 33psi rear).

Realistically you will only be able to burn at a maximum 56/57 litres before the car starts suffering especially if on a gradient - its not fun when it starts bunny hopping.

Avoid use of AC / opening windows. Will be intersting to see if you get past 400 miles.

Quick Reply: 450 miles, off boost!!
