Hi guys I notice that I can hear a ticking noise coming from the engine and when I get under the bonnet it sounds louder from the right hand side ??? Even when it's warm??? It's a 2004 2.0 turbo impreza wrx does anyone know if these car have valve lifters and if they are a easy change or a very expensive job?? I have also changed the oil to mobil10/40 but it's still the same thanks for any help would be much appreciated cheers

Some engines are just noisier than others - mine has shimmed bucket for the lifters and clearances have been checked and are okay, it just sounds a little rattley. I believe yours are also shimmed buckets - the shims are peanuts to buy, but you need to remove the cams to fit them I believe

As mentioned, could also be the injectors but you'd be unlucky for it to be anything more serious.

Get a long screwdriver, put it to your ear (use as a stethoscope) and move around the engine until you can pin point where the noise is coming from, it should give you a better idea of what the noise is then.

Worst case could be a slightly bent valve as they hit the valve seat at an angle causing it to 'tick'

or tappets need reshimming (engine out job)

or you have a noisy injector.
