There is a small plate on the front of the turbo which will have the model number on it.
Very difficult to see though when the turbo is on the car.

Not 100% certain on what models the type R and 2003 STI used. It'll start VF for sure and have a two digit number after.
I think the standard turbo on an R was a VF22 but could be wrong.
I'm sure one of the guru's will verify shortly buddy.

Classic usually have VF22,VF23,VF24 or VF28 or TD05(16G) or TD04(usually these have WRX)
And on your Type R i think standard turbo is VF24,but maybe i'm wrong

New age STi have usually VF35,VF30 or VF34(only one model this have Spec C Type RA V7 bugeye)..

round to the right of IHI will be a flat plate the top line should say "turbo spec" next to this will be your vf number.

You might have to look really carefully at the plate as the numbers can be quite faint sometimes, unlike on the td series of turbo's which are normally stamped in on the body.

You'll probably need to give the little plate a clean up and shine a torch on it to see the number.
As above, they are often very faint.
