hi should i under seal me car and what kind should i use

If you keep on top of cleaning the underneath it should be ok but if you want to I'd recommend the hammerite under seal with waxyoyl in it. Used it on my last Impreza and it worked wonders. I just brushed it on.

Make sure the underneath is spotless and free from moisture though before applying it

Is this thick (ish) and black in colour?

As above, hammerite is what i used. Cleaned it all with stiff brush, left to dry for couple of days (did it during the hot spell last year) then applied 2 coats to wheels arches, underside of sills etc.

It would be worth getting a quote from a local bodyshop as you might find by the time you've bought the stuff and spent time prepping and sealing you'd be better off paying for it to be done. It's not the most expensive of things to do.
