Umming and areing about 500bhp
Oh no i'm on the top of the mountain and loosing my footing.
So as the title suggests i'm thinking of going the whole hog and building a monster.
As my type r has thrown it's toys out of the pram i'm starting to think why not go mad as i will never have something like this again may as well go for it before i become senile.
So for those of you that have the magic numbers, whats it like to drive.
whats the best route to take and whats required.

First of all, without wanting to sound rude mate:
Can you afford it. For a reliable 500bhp on a classic, you're looking at 10k + for the engine and associated ancilliaries and 2.5k for the transmission, assuming someone else is doing the work for you.
If the answer to that is no, there isn't much point in recommending stuff.
Many people labour under the misconception that 500bhp can be done cheap. It can't

iam in the same boat , somehow 330 hp just dont cut it , i plan to aim for 550. Iam aware of the costs involved and as the OP said its pretty much a once in a lifetime thing for most people, so go for it. Hope you enjoy it , can always do it gradually over a year or 2 if needed

I have just completed by build, and all i can say, is expect the unexpected cost and time. If you are going to do it, do it right first time, and DONT try and cut corners, it will end in tears. Also, i think you will need more than £10K. IMO

put all ancillary in place ( fmic , induction etc ) and use somthing like a 20g to tide you over till you drop the wedge and go for the big 1 with fully built engine and big turbo. Plenty smiles to be had in the meantime

Indeed a relaible 500bhp would have cost more. I'm at the limit of the 2.5 block!
No point in discussing spec if the OP doesn't realise the ballpark figure expenditure involved. I'm not asking for his credit card!

I'd suggest something like a 2.35 block, SC50/54, forged pistons, rods, ACL bearings, supertech valves, cosworth gaskets, parallel fuel lines, RCM fuel pump, 3inch decat exhaust, Gen spec II headers, Hybrid FMIC, RCM cone filter, RCM oil pump, Mocal oil cooler, baffled sump, 6 speed gearbox, lightened flywheel, AP clutch, Ap 6 pot brakes. BC suspension if you're feeling the pinch and Ohlins if you're feeling flush. Add anything else I've missed.
Oh, dont for get labour to fit that little lot

From reading sll the hype about the 2.1s being built recently I dont think these can be ignored, especially when you consider the price of these in comparrison to a 2.33L build, I believe a SCDB 2.1L are good for 500hp.
I have an 06 spec c and am thinking I need more power, being realistic I feel the 2.33L route is out of my budget, I am considering stroking what I have and aiming for around 530hp

Ok, i'm thinking 2.1 stroker, i already have flywheel and clutch, and i can do alot of the work myself as i have a double garage and loads of tools, always done my own servicing and most repairs since i had my first car at 17,and i'm 45 and worked in the motor trade all my working life so i know my way around cars, so i think i'll be shaving 4k of the bill before i start.
I'm also not in a rush, as i know i won't be able to drive it until this time next year.
I may go as far as putting it together myself, it's a while since i did any engine internals and i fancy doing it again, as it's not as difficult as people think, you only need to look at some of the monkeys that work in garages to figure that out
I need to know who the machine shop is to use, to do the block work and if my heads and standard valves and cam are up to the job, V3 type r with the wilder cams.
I would also like some who has done it to list what i need.
I dont think its a big jump from where i have to go anyway apart from the obvious gear box and i even know some one that has run a type r box over 500 for some time. as long as your not launching it and stamping the gas they can take it for a while at least.
i have a simtec, fpr, walbro 255, Ap clutch exedy fly wheel, and i was going to go front mount anyway. my sti suspension is ok and it has a bolt in cage so it's a bit stiffer than normal. so just looking at brakes and engine and possibly oil cooler.
Do i need swirl pot and external pump set up.
I also have things like antiroll bar drop links and antilift kit.
I'm also not in a rush, as i know i won't be able to drive it until this time next year.
I may go as far as putting it together myself, it's a while since i did any engine internals and i fancy doing it again, as it's not as difficult as people think, you only need to look at some of the monkeys that work in garages to figure that out

Well V3 heads are one of the strongest out there so maybe get them ported and gas flowed.......you will find these heads on big builds.........I have the clinic do all my work but if someone knows where your from then they may know a local specialist.
I'd say anywhere between 10-15k for a good reliable build (if you put it together yourself) with some very highly regarded parts.....however you have the simtek and other things already so that price could come down.........there are always people selling stuff for cheap also so suppose you could keep an eye out on here or other sites. Thanks for the replies guys, i'm from nottingham so the clinic is kind of local and i have had work done there, so i'll be popping in for a coffee ads
I'm also wondering about drive shafts and if there is a way of uprating my gear box and what the costs involved are, i know most go for the 6speed but i figure that 1.5/2.5k buys a lot of cogs.
Still after a machine shop and i don't mind travelling for the right man.

We can do it as a drive in drive out package, a full long engine collected and returned if you remove it yourself, or just a short engine if you wish to do the heads yourself.
Looking at the list of parts you already have, £10,000 should cover the build to 500bhp and give you a nice useable car.

Are you going to go racing in it? Its a quick way to lose your licence these days on the roads. I tweaked my classic up pretty well, not as much as that though, and found it was difficult to be able to get full advantage of all its power. Too much traffic and spy cams around.
