UK imprezas classics? talk to me
hi all
im currently selling my clio 172 on ebay heres the link to see http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI.d...STRK:MESELX:IT
im selling it to buy a classic impreza but i have a few dilemmas
i have about 2500 to spend
im 24 and insurance isnt great, is the uk wrx a good one to go for? am i right in thinking a FMIC a decent exhaust and a remap will give near standard STI figures?
i would love an STI but i think the insurance will kill me, whats the price diffence in insurance between uk WRX/STI and jap wrx/sti?
there is 2 uk impreza 2000 both for 1595 on ebay and look good, is it worth buying cheaper and spending a bit servicing etc its what i usually do with my other cars
both are circa 100k should this put me off?
thanks

Whats that supposed to mean?
im not buying cheap as i cant afford it, just a cheap classic will be a good introduction
i may buy a blob eye STI towards the end of the year if i like the classic (insurance depending)
running costs dont bother me (i dont cover many miles) as well as having use of other cars. im also a mechanic so repairing is cheap
just insurance seems to be so varied on the imprezas with different companies

I wouldn't buy cheap. It will cost you more in the long run. If its cheap it is for a reason. Prices are pretty low at the minute. There are a lot of abused ones out there but also some minters. The price range isn't that wide from a nice one to a rot box so just get the nicest you can afford, that's been looked after.

Both silver and in Buckley by any chance. If so they're round the corner from me.
Don't let mileage put you off, it wether its been looked after that matters. My missus has an S plate with 120k and rising and alls been fine.
Wrx is a Jap model btw, Turbo 2000 is the UK version

Yes i think so, im going to go have a look at both of them
mileage doesnt put me off personally aslong as they are good for miles
i suppose if kept standard they have more than likley been looked after
Jonnyfresh: i would expect them to be ragged to be honest that doesnt bother me buying cheap isnt a bad thing, if its 1k cheaper than a lower miler example, that gives me 1k to spend uprating parts and servicing tyres etc etc rather than have receipts for 'apparent' work
i didnt realise the uk one isnt a wrx but a turbo2000 explains alot
thanks

K-cars? Hes dropped the price on them quite a bit, think they were PXs. Worth a nose if nothing else. Mechsnicslly you should know what you're looking for. Bodywork wise make sure everything lines up and that the common rot spots, sills, rear arches and behind the rear bumper are in good shape. Check the rear wheel well for signs of water too, sure fire sign of leaky rear light seals!!

What different components does the jap wrx have that the uk turbo 2000 doesnt?
sureley it cant be to expensive to bring it up to STI standards?
plus the fun is in the tuning

1993-1998 UK Turbo 2000's were 208bhp as standard. The MY99-00 UK Turbo's were 215bhp as standard.
The classic WRX varied from 240ps (early pre facelift) to 280ps (276bhp) for the MY99-00 ones.
A mate had a '93 WRX and was 240ps as standard and my old WRX was a 95 model with 260ps as standard.
Not as simple as you think with all the variants and limited editions.

If you put a decat exhaust and 3 port boost solenoid on with a Walbro fuel pump, and had the car remapped you'd be looking at between 260-280bhp on the standard TD04 which is maxxed by then. A differeny turbo would see 300bhp which is closing the limits on the standard engine internals and gearbox. A FMIC isn't really needed until you're into the 300's comfortably. But then it gets costly with drivetrain, engine, suspension and brake modifications required mate

And you've forgotten possibly the biggest difference, the gear ratios
The uk car has much more relaxed ratios for motorway cruising
Standard JDM WRX saloon has rear washwipe and grey tint windows
requires 100RON fuel unless remapped
220 to 280hp according to year/spec
TD05 or VF29 turbo (vf28 on sti)
Aircon standard
Lecky folding colour coded mirrors
Door handles and placky trim/skirts usually colour coded
Some of the WRX's had vented rear discs with the 2 pot fronts
Double din ice hole
don't know how they handle better cos I was under the impression that the suspension was roughly the same, unless we are talking STI which has different springs/shocks and ARBs
quotes for standard JDM WRX about £800 for me to insure
UK car has aerial in drivers door pillar
204 to 215hp according to year (with a healthy boost in PPP guise)
Smaller TD04 turbo which limits ouright power but spools up quickly and makes the car feel quite lively and responsive
Will happily run 95RON fuel tho 97 ron is advised to get the most from the Prodrive car
Speedo and revcounter other way round
Green tint windows
Aircon as an (desireable) option
Vented rear discs only appeared with 4 pot fronts MY99
Cost me £324 to renew insurance on a Prodrive modified MY97 (roughly 240hp) this year
oh and of course the bright button....
Someone tell me if I missed something

personally id get a uk2000 as this is what i got lol, and mod it to the power target and power type u want, my uk turbo with ecu and remap was pushin 260bhp but i wanted more so big turbo injectors de cat uprated clutch saw me hitting 330bhp, but now im on gear box no.3 and now in need of new engine, lol get one thats been well looked after and high mileagee isnt much of an issue, how ever u want one with a mappable ecu to keep mappin cost down or u may have to get aftermarket ecu to be able to map.
