Default Help with a weird noise?

(Sorry, I posted this in the wrong section to begin with, so re-posted it here)
Well, me and my dad have been looking around a Scooby turbo, and everything looks good, but when we took it out for a test drive, there was a very weird noise coming from what sounded like underneath the car.
It's not a constant noise, just after changing gear, for about 3-4 seconds, but if you dip the clutch, the noise stops.
My dad thinks it's the thrust bearing, but as it's in a dealership, we can't take it to the mechanic we use and get him to have a listen.
The noise is like a grinding, but very light grinding, not heavy.
Has anyone heard of this before, and if so, what was the problem?
Don't want to take the plunge into our first Scooby, and it be a dud needing a new gearbox or something serious...

It does sound like the symptoms of a thrust / release bearing to me
