Hmm, the modified ECU is a bit obscure. Is it illegal only if it's not declared on insurance or are all modifications deemed as illegal?

Also, at what age does this actually matter? Or is it for all.

The HID lights one is interesting - the JDM Bugs with HIDs don't have self-leveling or washers to the best of my knowledge so how will this affect them - in fact do any factory fit HIDs have washers and self-levelers in the Impreza range

My Hawkeye WRX has Xenons with washers and self levelling. Hope this helps!

Hopefully my my05 jdm will be ok as it has factory hid but no washers however if not might have to try to get some halogen bulbs modified to fit lights for mot then swap them back, but hopefully as imports are not eu type approved anyway might be ok

Theres no such thing as an "illegal modification" (other than strapping a spike to your car and mowing down commie 8astards, for example).

The modifications we make, ECU remap, suspension modifications, etc etc are not illegal.

It is really bad wording on behalf of VOSA, since no such thing as "illegal modification" even exists.

The manual for 2012 as it stands at the moment does not have the ECU requirements in, however the headlamps is interesting reading -

Vehicles equiped with HID or LED dipped beam headlamps MAY be fitted with headlamp washers and a suspesnsion or headlamp self levelling system.

Where such systems are fitted they must work; however it is accepted that it may not be possible to readily determine the functioning of self levelling systems. In such cases the benefit of the dbout mus be given.

Method of inspection -

Where HID or LED dipped beam headlamps are fitted, switch on the headlamps and check the operation of any headlamp levelling and cleanind devices.

Reason for rejection

A headlamp levelling or cleaning device inoperative or otherwise obviously defective.

Therefore, all I can see that it is a requirement to meed the slightly altered alignment regulations regardless of HID or not.

Most of this is to match EU legislation where other countries have illegal mods, we in the UK do not.

HID's are not legal in the UK but because new cars have EU type approval we cannot deny them a registration. At MOT they cannot test self leveling but they can test beam and headlamp washers. Should those be ok the lights should pass the MOT.

There are alot of changes coming into force next year for mot's including flat rate standardised charges across the UK circa £50. In terms of changes to cars, for the most part they will apply to cars registered after the changes come into force. Our mot tester was talking about all this the other day.

This is a load of crap, my mate mots my car i asked him about this a while ago, they are not aloud to remove parts of the car to look at ecu's ect, its only a safety check and an mot tester does not care if the car is 1bhp or 1000bhp lol as long as its safe to drive, at the end of the day its the owners car to do as he pleases with( as long as its safe to drive that is)

He may not own an MOT garage for long if they change the regime the way they are talking about!
To "harmonise" with the EU, they want to bring in MOT's only four years from buying new, and only once every two years after that.
It sounds great, until you realise that for a year at least, there won't be any MOT's, followed by only half the ones you did before. 50,000 out of work right away. Not to mention the effect on road safety. Can you imagine some rock apes going two years with no kind of check at all?

I think a yearly test is a good idea as some people don't know how to look after a car, dint bother with service and have no mechanical knowledge or sympathy at all, these owners cars could be lethal after 2 years. Pity that there is no sure fire way of testing a car based on mileage as well as time as some vehicles can do 10 times the mileage of others in the same time frame but this would be very difficult to control. I also await the new rules as I think it is the start of a slippy slope and modified cars could be a thing of the past. Europe are more strict than us.
