Default OH DEAR,,,,, ANY THOUGHTS ??

Right guys, got a little problem with the car and hoping to get some advice.
Took the car out tonight, was in one of those moods we all get so didn't give the car an easy drive. Nothing too crazy but did give it some stick.
After about 30 mins of driving I headed home. I had the windows down, gave it one last boot load in 2nd and heard what I can only describe as a high pitch screetch when it came on full boost. It was a short sharp loud scream of a noise. On hearing this I decided to drive on and investigate. Car was still making boost well, holding boost and no signs of smoke etc. Car felt fine but everytime I loaded it up I could hear this noise.
Took the car home, ticked over perfectly with no unusual noises etc. I checked all the usual suspects, hoses etc but no joy. I can't see anything a miss.

Anybody got any pointers,

Thanks as always, Matt.

Hi Matt,it could be something as simple as above[fan belt] but would suspect the turbo bearing gone or the impeller is catching on the housing inside the compressor housing maybe.
Was it there every time you came into boost?

Does sound very much like a bearing failure tbho, have you had a chance to look at that oil pressure gauge readings yet mate?

Had a play with the oil pressure gauge and sender last night.
It reads - 120 psi on cold start up dropping off to 90 after about 5 mins. Sits at 85/90 at normal driving and then shooting up to about 110 psi at full chat. Hot tickover is around 50 psi. Still pretty high don't you think ???

Bearing Failure, I hope not but I fear you may well be right. Would it still make perfect boost though and how long have I got before total disaster.
I think a new setup may well be on the cards....

If that's what you think then don't leave it. Wip off the turbo, put a DTI on it and check the play on the spindle. If the bearing had gone it could be an easy cheap fix. If you keep driving it then you might bugger the whole engine.

Now your talking better readings Matt, thoses are very similar to mine on cold and hot readings so no problem there mate.
On the turbo IF it is the bearing starting to fail it's one of those's how long is a piece of spring questions but not long i would have thought before it just gives up the ghost.
I've seen some diesel turbo's when stripped for head gaskets that look like they have swallowed a piece of steel through the impeller and still give boost so just because its failing doesn't necessarily mean it will not work just fine for now.
Best to find out earlier than later though mate.

Another horrible job for the weekend then. Was going to fit my new box but that will have to wait I guess.
If the turbo has sh*t itself will it be obvious to me or should I just ship it off to a specialist ??

Had something very similar a few years back, and it turned out to be manifold to up pipe gasket was blowing.

The turbo should have very minimal movement up/down but more crucially no end float which is pulling/pushing the shaft forward and backward.
If it has had a bearing failure it will feel loose in the bearing housing.

+1 Banny,i have also heard a uppipe to turbo gasket blow sound similar to a screech.
Not a usual gasket to fail though as its a very thick well made gasket but very possible.

Believe it or not you can buy re-build kits on ebay ! If it's really knackered it will be obvious to your touch. If you wiggle the turbine and feel play its busted. If you can't by touch it does not mean it's ok it could still be out of tolerance and needs re-building. you will need to support it and use a DTI to check the tolerance.
Could be a problem with the waste gate actuator letting out some gas making the noise ?

Mine's doing the same, and have been advised to change the up-pipe gasket

Guys, thank you for all the comments. Very much appreciated as always.
Looking like my Saturday is fully booked then, lol.
I'll start with the manifold gaskets and then whip the tubby off and go from there.

So, if it does turn out to be turbo issues it's fully repairable then ? What's this going to cost me and would I not be better just having a new turbo if re-build price is high.
eBay kits, really ??

I would just get a new unit if she blown to be on the safe side if money will allow.
Doing it yourself is possible but as for balancing the unit once assembled
I would never be happy with that imo but that's me.

Don't think I really fancy rebuilding it myself to be honest, I'd have to send it away anyway for balancing etc.
If its going to cost £400 odd for it done properly then I may just go down new turbo route. And if I'm doing that I may as well go bigger, I do fancy an MD321 to be honest...

Ill have to get the car apart and go from there, may turn out to be a bloody gasket yet, lol.

Well chaps, had the car apart yesterday to try and find out what's going on.
Took the manifold off, turbo off and downpipe off.
Turbo has zero play, felt like new still. Manifold was perfect and downpipe was fine.
I found that two of the lower nuts on the turbo/downpipe had worked itself really loose. I put the car back together and made sure all the nuts/bolts were as tight as ****.

Just been out in it and it's fine, no strange noises whatsoever. It's just making too much boost now which I can sort by dropping the duty on the AVCR.
It must of just been leaking some air on full chat causing the screeching noise.

Well happy with that even though I would of liked an MD321, lol.
Thanks everybody for your input,

Little pic of the motor...
