Default Why...

Why is that everytime a WRX STI see's me in my e46 M3, do they have to try and race me?

To be honest, most of time I ignore them. But every now and then I do put my foot down just to show them up. (And it might get me in trouble soon).

Why would they think that 265bhp car will beat a 343bhp car?

I love Subaru's and I always will. But the reason I moved away from Subaru is because of other owners having to race everything they see and because others always have to drive like idiots.

it happens to many cars not just you, i use mine as a daily driver & i get 'idiots' up my backside wanting to have a go & i think why? Its just the drivers mate thinking they are & have something special that they think or can show you up if you 'bite', nothing else.

I get so frustrated when I see folk in DB9's, M3's, M5's or Porsche 911's driving everywhere at 30 in 40's etc, why the hell get a fast car ffs? Doing 120 down the M1 all day isn't the be all and end all.

You don't see that many about and to be fair not many car owners would know just how brutally quick an M3 is. I can imagine most folk see BM's as rep mobiles not worth teasing into racing.

How many STi's are only running 265bhp - that's probabaly why they have a go. That said, you 'Germans' are the worst at racing and tail-gating at every opportunity

A well driven Sti should see off an m3 no problem, my standard 99 classic had no problem up to about 120 mph. so an Sti should eat one.

To be fair I often get dic*s in E46 M3's who think they are the worlds fastest car and try to race me. Every now and then I show them just how slow an M3 is. 340 bhp in a car that weighs 1.6 tons. Lol....
I even embarassed a new M3 a few weeks ago.

And before you all start, NO I don't condone road racing, but when road and weather conditions permit a quick blast to see off a poser in an M3 is ok in my book.

Been there, done that - roof box fitted and boxster trying to cosy up in my boot on an entry slip road to the M6, just thought it would be polite to get up to speed with the traffic I was joining (as quickly as I could) - tailgating is definitely a German car trait along with broken indicators and mirrors

E46 M3 = 343 BHP and 1600KG. This works out at 214 BHP per ton if my math is correct.

Classic STI = 280 BHP and 1250KG. This works out at 224 BHP per ton.

These are approx figures but you get the point.

Road racing and a quick blast on a straight, quiet and dry road are completely different things my friend.
Please don't tell me your another "fast car" owner who uses his/her car in a manner more suited to a 70 year old Volvo driver.
I don't mind admitting I occasionally take my Subaru to the naughty side of the speed limit, but NEVER drive in a dangerous manner.

Anyway, back to the topic.
If you guys think an M3 is a 'brutally' fast car then you have never been out in a seriously quick car. I don't think 215 bhp per ton is alot to be honest. Nice car though the E46 M3 and I'm actually thinking about buying a convertible one for the summer. It wouldn't compare to my weekend toy but in all fairness it doesn't have too, they are completely different kinds of cars.

Don't forget though, the M3 has a lot less drivetrain losses, so more of those horses make it to the ground - which helps after 80mph!

However, most M3s never make their book power, always down by at least 20bhp on various dynos!

Funny thing is me and a friend had an M3 e46 make a point of cutting through traffic just to show us up , we were only in a Lotus Elise so I imagine he would of thought an easy target ............................ Type R Honda engine with a Jackson Racing supercharger strapped to it thought differently . Bye Bye M3 and Bye Bye most things it is unbelievable how fast it is . 0-60 about 3.5 seconds and a top speed of about 170mph (170 mph in a car made by people in tweed is probably not a great idea ) .

Not at all, and I wasn't condemning you for condoning it... but you do condone it (albeit only it in certain circumstances).

Funnily enough most M3's that see me in my Scooby try and have a go! I find Bimmer drivers the worst tbh, They always seem to have something to prove, Funny that as that's what everyone say's about Impreza's! I was always quite surprised at the fact that they were pretty much on par with my WRX, I thought that with the extra power they would be a bit quicker but not the case at all, Always makes me laugh, We have an e39 M5 at work and I always thought they were monster's that would eat most cars but it's not as quick as my standard Sti, Although it is a lovely drive! The Bimmer's are big heavy cars that go well when they get going but not that quick from a stand still, There are plenty of vid's on youtube of M3's and M5's etc getting done off the line at places like Santa Pod.

I had a play with a E46 M3 in my wrx and it never showed me up, wasnt anything in it and if there was it was in my favour well at least up to around 90. And it was also the M3 driver that initiated it

Most m3 drivers are just as bad ! But I do like to show one up on the odd occasion. Around 300bhp never had a problem.

I know what you meen mate. Im always getting E36 and E46 M3's wanting to race me in my scoob. Always seems to be the older m3's whereas the new v8 m3 drivers dont seem to be bothered about that sort of suff.
By the way my "sti" was 320hp out the box before the mods. I thought a standard sti was 280hp or 305 if ppp'ed.

Standard STis when they were first released were 265PS not even bhp when they came here. PPP gave it 305PS.

Not a lot in it really.

100ps = 99bhp = 74KW

First STI version 250PS
Second was the STI RA version in 1994/5 at 275PS
Then STI V2 at 275PS
STI V3/4/5/6 all booked at 280PS

These are the figures Subaru issued at launch although 280PS was the max any car manufacturer could state at the time.

So if a few drivers in their E46 M3 start attempting to race you in the future, will you sell the M3 and move onto another car? :-)

I like to have the odd play but just not every single time I pop to the shops.

In fact, if any STI boys fancy a play and are from the Sussex south coast area then please let me know ;-) as I do love the sound of a scooby going flat out.
