What a complete and utter bag of Sh1te!

Good God, lets just hand our keys over the the thieving little ***** right now!

Did anyone see that program last night in Joyriders et al in Glasgow? Yet more little ****'s pinching cars and causing carnage..

Give up now, lets just trade our motor's for one of those crap, blue 3 wheeled Disabled cars of the 1970's. At least we would get free parking!

Unhappy

Today's Telegraph reports that Judges have ordered Derbyshire police to hand back a stolen Ford Escort to Mr Costello who had stolen it. Apparently he was arrested in July 1996 but never charged (a car ringing kit found under the seat). He will now be awarded damages (but he will have to pay legal costs). This was because the car ID numbers had been welded over and engine number rubbed out. The owner could not be traced. The law as it stands says that "a thief is entitled to the protection of the criminal law against the theft from him of that which he himself has stolen".

So our taxes are being spent on awarding damages to this thief. A strange world methinks. DL

unfortunatly guys....."tis the way of the UK"
always been the same in this country, & will probably stay that way.

me being a bit of a "Victor Meldrew" anyway things like this just adds to my huge list of daily moans and general "pissed-offered-ness"(is that a word)about the ridiculous SH*T that goes on over here.

Right, anyone got a low-loader? There's a nice Porsche in the car park that I fancy I've got an angle grinder handy so stripping it's id should be no probs. For F*$k's sake don't we have any rights anymore? We might as well invite every burgular in the area around as well. How many of you could prove ownership of your tv's, hi-fi's, pc's etc. I'll have to spend all weekend auditing all the serial numbers now!

You really didn't think the law was there to protect YOU did you?? Oh no the law is there to protect the criminal.

If further proof is needed just think what would happen to the person whos car this is if he gave the car thief a good slap.

Seems to me that unless a criminal admits to a crime the police are unable to prosecute due to lack of evidence and they will get away with it.

Makes me

Question

Playing the devils advocate here, but...

There appears to be NO PROOF that Mr Costello stole the Escort in the first place!!! Maybe he bought the car in good faith for cash in a pub car park. Maybe he never realised that the VIN numbers had been removed. Exactly what is a "car ringing kit" - a screwdriver, a file, a maglite?

If there is no proof "beyond reasonable doubt" that he stole the car then he is innocent (under English law), so why should he lose _his_ car?

I don't know what the "damages" is for - if he was only arrested and detained, then maybe it is for lost earnings. Again, perfectly acceptable if he was an innocent man.

The law seems to have been applied fairly in this case, given the circumstances. Perhaps the Police should have done a better detective job in the first place!

Agree about the police doing a better job ,the vehicle should be q plated and the bloke should not be allowed to sell it only scrap it.Unfortuately the Police is run by accountants and the people with the expertise in these matters being moved away from the jobs they do best. Put some distinquishing marks on everything on your car even it is broken up the police can still ID the parts

Crikey
It's almost worth becomming a crim with all laws being in their favour.
Just my luck to get caught first time out, so i'll stick to being honest and saving for a new car.

Just read about this in a daily paper ( a couple of days ago ) nearly fell off the sofa.
Just goes to prove that the law protects the theif ( f***ing scum ).
So what is the point of the police?
You get nicked you for doing 70mph down a deserted country road with no houses, schools, hospitals, old floks homes or junctions.
OK so the guy may have bought the car in good faith but he was still handling stolen property.
Once again proof that the old bill don't give a f*** about stolen property, murder, rape, sexual abuse, etc. All they are cocerned about is that you might be going a few mph over the speed limit, where you haven't upset anyone, offened anyone or abused anyone.
The law sucks and will probably suck for years to come.

'old up a minit. Old Bill didn't make this decision, some old stuffed shirt of a gormless doddering judge did.

I can tell you Old Bill will be as exasperated by this cr@p as all the rest of us are.

Did you see "Real Estates" or "Car Wars" last week, they are roping in the same old punters (and they already know who they are) all the time and the courts give 'em community service etc. These ar$holes make no effor to deny they are thieving scum, because it's a big laugh and they get away with it.

They should be made to have a word with some big angry members who's car they have knicked and trashed. What did we see? Three teenage ringpieces facing a nice lady, who's car had been knicked, across the desk. They must have been quaking in their boots.

No wonder so many Old Bill are trying to retire.
