ive just had a new engine fitted in my car (95 classic import turbo) and after it was left running it cut out. the garage has found that the hydraulic lifters wont close and all the compression is going out the inlet manifold.the guy said he drained the oil so it could be started with fresh but still no go. is this an easy fix? is this something that happens on these engines? any and all help would be much appreciated

 

not sure on the scooby motor matey but thats a classic for the older volvos especially after a cam belt change the oil tends to drain out of the lifters and you can end up cranking the engine over for a good 5-10 mins before they work again and it sparks to life.

but you state that the engine was running when it happened no idea on that matey sorry

has he checked that youve got oil pressure to the heads?

 

yeah the car was running for 20 mins no probs just a very slight ticking, they switched it off topped up the fluids and had a job 2 restart. compression check and it turns out the lifters are keeping the valves open

 

ahh sorry i mis read the original post ok so they are keeping the valves open thats a different story

1, is the oil pressure to the head excessive
2, is it the right grade oil (running in oil or standard)
3. how long has the engine sat unused ie is it rebuild etc etc

 

thats ok mate i prob didnt explain very well.im a painter and reall dont know the inside of a engine.im gonna link this to my mate facebook page so he can get ideas for why its doing it.ive spoken 2 one guy and he said hes never had this prob in 10 yrs of playing with scoobs so im in the hands of you guys.as for your questions ive replyed below.i thank u for ur help mate

ok so the engine u brought you heard running before the purchase i assume,
tbh never heard of a lifter sticking open that i can remember, thats why ive asked some basic mech questions, no doubt one of the scooby guys will be able to help more im still to get my hands on a scooby even though im a 45yr old mechanic sorry im sort of in the dark as well on this

umm might be stupid question but the cam timing etc is set right ?

can they depress the lifters and are the valve stems moving freely ?

 

lol after the job these guys have had on mine i think ill stick 2 the decorating.he said the timing is ok and its deffo the lifters makeing the valves stick.im sure someone will know but im realy not sure what else they have done as yet.
