Fuji do own Subaru - you can access Fuji's website (in English) if you search on Google (or similar) and get a complete rundown of their corporate structure (if you really want to, that is ).

Don't know about Mitsubishi - sorry.

Thanks Tony

So are Fuji Heavy Industries an independent company that nobody else owns any steak in?

So they are not owned by GM or anything?

Ah here we go another can of worms.

Fuji Heavy Industries, I have a feeling they are big enough to own themselves and not need anybody else to own them. So I did what was suggested and had a look for Fuji Heavy Industries on Google, and look what I found: (Admittedly this Press Release was on March 28th 2002 so some may already know this, but information is power…)

http://www.fhi.co.jp/english/index.html

http://www.fhi.co.jp/english/news/press/2002/02_03_28b.htm

Strengthening Subaru Design activity at Fuji Heavy Industries

Fuji Heavy Industries Ltd. (FHI), a global manufacturer of transportation and aerospace-related products and the maker of Subaru automobiles, today announced a series of changes in the management of Subaru Design Department, effective April 1. These changes will strengthen its global design capability and further improve Subaru brand value.
Mr. Kiyoshi Sugimoto is appointed Vice President, Senior General Manager of Product & Portfolio Planning Division and General Manager of Subaru Design Department. He will supervises all of design activities for the Subaru brand. Mr. Andreas Zapatinas of the former Director of "CENTRO STILE", the design center of Alfa Romeo in Italy, is appointed Chief Designer of Advanced Design.
Under their leadership, Subaru Design will work to create an innovative and individual identity and Subaru's global brand value. To this end, Subaru Design will conduct aggressive development with great urgency under the leadership of Mr. Sugimoto, while utilizing Mr. Zapatinas' international experience.

General manager of Subaru Design Department: Mr. Kiyoshi Sugimoto

Mr. Sugimoto was responsible for the first generation "Legacy" design, and has demonstrated his expertise as the leader of the Subaru Design Department ever since. As an officer of Tug International Co., Ltd., a design subsidiary of FHI, he also had rich experience in a variety of design businesses besides automobile industry. Further as he has broad network in the international design community, he will greatly contribute to establishing a globally appearing Subaru Design.

Chief designer of Advanced design: Mr. Andreas Zapatinas

Mr. Zapatinas was born in Athens, Greece. After studying design in California, he worked at Pininfarina, FIAT, and BMW design studios, and since December 1998, was Director Alfa Romeo, Centro Stile.
He has been responsible for a wide variety car design projects. Among these was Alfa Romeo the 147 which gained recognition as the 2001 Car of The Year in Europe and the 2001-2002 Import Car of The Year in Japan.

DC runs Mitsubishi now.

Gm has a stake, but since they can't sell anything over here, they are leaving Subaru alone mostly (apart from foisting the Traviq/Zafira on them ).

Fuji Heavy Industries (FHI) is probably best known as the maker of Subaru cars (almost 90% of sales). But the company also produces buses, railcars, aircraft components, engines, and garbage trucks. Subaru is best known for its all-wheel-drive vehicles; its Forester and Outback models have that SUV look even though they are built on small-car platforms and designed for moderate driving conditions. FHI operates in the US through its Subaru of America subsidiary. It has manufacturing operations in China, Japan, Taiwan, and the US. FHI has teamed up with General Motors in an effort to boost its international sales. GM owns a 20% stake in FHI.

So I guess those Saab Turbos might get better handling in the future !!

Porsche share intellectual property with them.

Porsche have done suspension work for them (ala B4) and Subaru help them out with water cooled pancakes.
