Default CAN I CLEAVE THE CALIPER ? Refurbishing 4 pot calipers.

Hi guys. I want to refurbish my 4 pots (remove the old paint ect. ) and was wondering if I could split the caliper in two ? I mean, unbolt those long bolts that are spoiling two parts of the caliper in to one. By doing that I could do it properly, will have much more access and easier to clean. What do you think ?
If I'll do it, what is torque setting to put them back ?
Cheers

they can be split, but don't lose the small o ring in the middle, not sure about torque settings maybe ian will come along with that.

Remember what you can see when the wheel is on.

I've just done mine. My neighbour is a brake specialist and took them off for me and had a good look at them and told me they were fine.

I sanded them down, washed them and painted them.

Have a look at the thread, lots of people with pics and what they've done,

I'm about 20 mins from you.

Hi. The calipers are off the car. Just bought them 2 weeks ago. I'm not desperate to put them on the car, because I've got some other parts that are waiting to be fit as well. I'm planning to do some Track Days this year :-) I'll have to buy a set of pistons first, the old ones are not that bad but... So in the meantime I decided to re-paint them.
Thank You for the offer. I'll let you know if I'll need any help with brakes.
Actually I might need your help ;-) Have you done a clutch change before ???

God no! I struggle with getting a wheel off

But, i've just had an organic greedy clutch fitted which has made the car pull like a horse in comparisson to what it was doing.

If you need my neighbours details he might be able to help you. But it's mates rates and the work will be done outside..

Cheers. I'm pretty wise on mechanics but I've never done a clutch before. All other things I've done to my car (complete suspension change, exhaust, discs and pads, Induction Kit ect.) I've done it myself. Technically I know how to change the clutch, but with the first time it would be nice to have somebody that done it before. Just in case.
If you'll need any help with exhaust, discs and pads, suspension ect. let me know. I've got all the tools needed.

If you need a refurb kit I have one for sale - was about to post it in the classified shortly....

Consists of 8 stainless pistons so they never corrode again, caliper grease, replacement pad retaining pins/circlips, stainless bleed nipples and a full OEM subaru seal/dustcover kit.

Also have new groved/dimpled discs & some EBC yellowstuff pads also

PM me if interested

Was going to refurb my calipers but purchased a set that had just been done instead!

I can fully refurbish them for £149.99 or £219.99 with stainless pistons.

Either painted or powdercoated a colour of your choice.

Check out my website for more details.

Yes strip them down to recondition them it will be a lot easier , we strip them down completely , bead blast them to take off all rust and muck , mask the bores and mounting faces and prime and spray them , they come out like brand new calipers as you can see from the pictures I posted on my thread.

Torque the bolt back up to 50 lb ft when you rebuild them making sure the 'O' ring is in the recess properly.

If you need any advise just give me a ring

Cheers Ian

Good question :-)
He's not SN member. I've sent him 3 emails but he never replied so... The only good thing is that the seals and these big "o" rings inside bores were new. I paid for these calipers £180 POSTED so didn't loose that much money, I think.
I'll give you a call next week because I'm VERY interested in your brake discs and NDX pads (all round) so we could sort it out those "o" rings and caliper bolts.

Ian, I bought some "O" rings, they are same diameter but they`ve got round edges not flat/square like these I took out. Can I use these or not ?
Cheers
