Question

what do people use to top up their oil. I've heard Mobil Motorsport is good, but is it readily available. Is Mobil One any good. What do you all use ??

come on guys - somebody must put oil in their engines. Might sound like a dumb-**** question but the wrong oil may do harm to the engine, or may not be optimal for the engine temp, or too viscous etc etc.

There is a multitude of oils out there. I just went into local Fina garage, and their oil guide is cr@p, just says "Quartz 9000 5w40" is recommended for "high performance modern cars (petrol or diesel)" Not a single mention of 'turbo' anywhere. Any comments ?

Pretty much any brand-name full synthetic will do, providing it meets the classifications API SJ, CCMC G5 / ACEA A3. Ideally it should be 10W40, 15W40, 15W50 viscosity. Don't worry about mixing brands, all will mix with each other quite happily.

Never mind that Mobil 1 crap, buy British and get the best oil around, Castrol RS.

That's the oil that Damon Hill used to win the world title, so it must be quality stuff, that's why I use it.

That £2:99 re-cycled stuff from Tescos is brilliant, you can change your oil every month at that price!! Imagine THAT kind of protection?? I dont get taken in by all this synthetic balloney!!

Pete

PS:- Listen to me and blow your engine!!

ESSO ULTRON at £32.00 for four ltrs. You need to find what was put into the car on the last service not wise to mix different types of oil. Halfords recommend semi synthetic in their book by the oils

Don’t forget that a bike (most anyway) use a wet clutch, so they have additives which will help the clutch perform as it should and cars use a dry clutch. I can't see a difference in using bike oil in a car (apart from the expense and that most bikes don’t have a turbo) but you wouldn’t want to put car oil in a bike...........I think

I only did it as a tempary thing, I shall be buying some oil at the weekend and doing a change...
Although I only topped up with the bike oil..
So I am sure it is fine...

So come on someone must know this :

>>On that subject should the level be checked cold or warm?

The heat generated in a turbo engine must be far greater than in a motorcycle engine, surely? I would guess that the extreme temperature range is one of the main reasons for requiring a fully synthetic oil. Castrol RS seems to work ok for me.

Mobil 1 15w/50 motorsport is available from any Halfords store!

15w/50 is slightly thicker than 10w/40.
The difference is negliable.
Personaly i'd go for the Mobil 1 Motorsport, but Silkolene is also a very popular brand used in scoobys! Can't remember the product name or viscosity though...

Do a search on this subject, as i seem to remember this topic being brought up not too long ago!

I thought I had a leak last night...

oil slick (exaggeration) on the driveway..

searched the garage and returned with an empty Mobile 1 can (left over from oil changes on my MR2) and a can of Silkolene Comp synthetic 15/40 motorcycle 4 stroke oil... in for a penny in for a pound decided motorcycle oil was better than no oil... says on can for use in high revving, high stressed engines.. (sounds like my driving)
stuck some in and got the oil to the bottom minimum mark..
Then go into the house and speak to my wife who says that her sister visited and left a huge oil mark on the drive! (doh...)
This morning it is just above the max so I think it must have just swished about the engine a bit and took over night to run to the bottom.

On that subject should the level be checked cold or warm?

Looking on the silkolene oil it meets all the specs mentioned above and was £22.99 for 4 litres... so much be pretty good stuff.
I might get some proper stuff and do an oil change at the weekend though.

I used to work for Castrol and have seen the research and tests and my mate was one of the chemists who helped design Castrol RS.

For something as dear to your heart as a Scoob, you should only use fully synthetic oil, it's the best you can put into your engine.

The brand should be a reputable one, i.e. Castrol, Mobil, Esso, Shell etc. I wouldn't dream of putting any "own brand" oil in my car, synthetic or not!!!

Jolly Green Monster, there's loads of debate on the motorcycle forums about whether to use "motorcycle" oil (Silkolene, Redline etc) or just Mobil 1. There doesn't seem to be any hard evidence either way, just anecdotal "my mate says you shouldn't do it".

You would think that with a typical sportsbike revving to 14 - 15K, that bike oil is more than good enough for use in a car. It'd be interesting to speak to a chemist from one of the big oil companies about this.

JGM -- best to check the oil cold 'cos then all the oil will have flowed back to the sump. Although interestingly, my wife's Punto's manual insists on the engine being hot when the oil's checked. The oil level is slightly higher when the motor's hot (oil expands like most other things when heated) so if the cold level is about 3/4 full, that's fine.

Question

back to 10w50 etc

what does 10 and what does 50 mean. I heard that 10 means effective protection above 10ºc
and 50 means 50ºc, but I sure engine oil gets above 50ºc, and definately gets below 10ºc - especially in this weather.

Anybody know.

Just to confuse you a bit more,My dealer told me never to use Mobil 1. Only to use a quality semi synthetic oil.

Guys, please do a search on this one. There has been loads of debate recently.

From memory, use only fully synthetic as turbos destroy everything else.

Castrol RS and Mobil Motorsport are the top recommendations, but ONLY with the right viscosity. That is Castol RS 10-60 and Mobil Motorsport 15-50. Do not use 0-rated oil - it is too thin when you really get going.

Change oil after a track day, regardless of mileage, and filter. Official Subaru oil filter is as good as any, and retains warranty.

At this time of year it take several miles for oil to get up to working temperature - a lot longer than water temperature. Don't floor it until everything's nicely warmed up.

Richard.

Does anyone know what Subaru's officially recommended oil is? Or what specialist garages recommend? I heard Subaru said Mobil1 0W40 was too thin for turbos, so 5W40 synthetic and higher should be ok. Does everyone just change oil at the service intervals, or do you do it more often?

Right folks here`s the script.
About 4 weeks ago I did an oil & filter change, put in mobil 1 with a new Subaru filter. Last week woz talkin 2 my m8 who worked for Subaru, about gettin some oddz an
endz done. He told me to "GET THAT MOBIL 1 OUTTA MY MOTTA B4 I FUGGED IT". On Friday I did another oil & filter change, the Mobil was black came out like runnin in oil Filled her up with Masterlube / Quantum Pro Syn 5W 40 (you know the 1 Partco do in the gold container) as the m8 advised me thats wot Subaru use she`s runnin as sweet as a nut an the oil wozn`t that expensive.

Take wot u will from that, but I won`t b usin mobil 1 again.

I've been running Havoline Europe (5-40) in the last few weeks to test it out but have used BP Vervis Racing (10-50) over the past two years and am finding that I will probably go back to BP on my next change.

Though it revs smoothly now, I find that my engine feels better with (or I'm just more accustomed to) the feel of 10-50.

Either way, both are 100% synthetic which I've been on after breaking my engine in.

Cheers.

According to the UK manual - Subaru recommend Mobil1 5W 40 (for a car still in the warranty period) - this is not generally available in the UK and has to come from your dealer (I think you can get it on the continent). Outside of the warranty, they recommend Mobil1 Motorsport 15W 40. I'm not sure what the recommendations are for 'import' cars.

Personally as long as you use good quality oil and change it regularly you should be OK. I've used Mobil1 5W 40 since new. Now done 22K miles with no problems - it's the only oil my dealer will fit.
