Default 6-speed gearbox, what gear around town?

Can you use 6th at 30mph? Sometimes mine will, other times it groans.

2.5 conversion.

I change down if it groans, but just sort of drifting along at 30, often it seems fine.

Mine will tolerate 30mph (just) and as you say just change down if the motor starts to complain.

Me too. IMO neutral would be a more suitable gear.
Sixth gear at 30 mph - did your mother teach you how to drive?

30mph - 4th
40mph - 5th
60mph - 6th for motor way cruise/skint and need to save on fuel type driving

Was alway's under the impression that putting strain on the engine while going slow in a high gear was just a waste of fuel?

using the wrong gear puts strain on the clutch and gearbox.

Yes but i have a jdm box and 5th is the correct gear for 30. I wouldn't do 30 in 6th in a uk box.

1. 5th gear really unless it's downhill...
2. It's a 2.5 classic. so no twin-scroll boolocks thanks Tony
3. Alcazar is a grown-up with a nice car, not a hooligan.
4. Mine isn't even happy in 5th (hawkeye DCCD box)

I stick to a sensible gear which in my 2.5 is a happy 5th, or 4th on an incline. I'll slip into 6th at around 40-45 without an issue. 30 though is too far outside the ratio of 6th, and will be counter productive. IMHO.

I have however started accelerating down hills and feathering off up them, also knocking it out of gear when coming to a stop, and do get 30 miles more from a tank with this style. But more honestly is subsidises my 5.20am drive to work, which is fairly "expensive" to say the least, more so if i get caught me thinks

People keep saying those 2.5's have loads of torque low down, maybe not then?

Well, I'd not expect it to pull away, and would change down if I needed to, but what damage can it do just pootling along a level road at 30?

P.S. 30 in mine in fourth gear is 2000 rpm, just above the Exedy rattle range

I have always found 5th gear at 30mph fine in my 2.5.....does'nt have much urgency, but its not rattling along moaning about it either!
