If you are finding ebay expensive then an aftermarket place maybe even dearer. Why not just stick with the STi on top? I know you have a WRX, but its only an upgrade and happens to have STi on it.

I also would have thought a cover would reduce its effiency

Perhaps some people, not you i'm sure; might like to modify their Subaru without letting the insurance company know the details, so if you had a crash in a WRX (un modified on insurance docs) that had STI plastered all over the top of the engine bay it "might" look suspect, however if you got that Sti paint off, with something like terps (which does work, but be carefull, as the gills are of course weak), then you would have a nice Sti spec intercooler that was visually not noticably different to a standard WRX intercooler.....unless the insurance assessor is a scooby nut.......like many of us.....?...

Not you of course, but someone might think like that?

the reason i dont want sti on my car is because its a wrx.The ebay ones have sti on them which i dont want or prodrive which they arent. My plan was to remove the sti and then get it polished to look a bit different.

I take it its a newage intercooler with the sti in big letters across the fins?

If so, just mask up and rattle can the fins silver, if you do it very lightly 2 or 3 times it wont block the gaps between the fins and will cover the sti.

as above if careful with spray cans then that'll cover it and do whatever colour you wish. Good luck, and once finished get some piccys up, always nice to see what other do to there cars, especially something different.
