Default Tyres

I have been offered some Nokian Winter Tyres WRG2's but they are 225/50/17 will these run OK on my Standard 2005 WRX rims (Blob), currently running 215/45/17? What issues might there be?

Thanks

The rolling radius will be about 15mm more than your current tyres (225/50 is a profile of 112.5mm, 215/45 is a profile of 96.75mm). At best this will make your speedo read 5-6% low, at worst it could affect handling or foul on the arches or suspension.

Speed with be 5% greater than indicated

speedo reads 60, you would be doing 63mph etc

isnt it illegal to have it one way around
ie if your speedo under reads like above?
but ok if it over reads?

I assume you mean in the UK. The regulations for us is that your speedometer must always read fast. The actual limit of how fast is true speed plus 10% plus 4km/h (2.5 m/ph). So, at 30 MPH your speedo can read from 30 to 35.5, but not 29!

This does not cover trucks over 3.5 tonnes. They fall into tachograph regulations which are totally different. They have a plus and minus tolerance of about 6 km/h either way. This is made up of a tolerance for the instrument, another one added for the truck and some more for uncertainness in the calibration, tyres ect.

what is the remaining tread? chances are they have 4mm of tread left.

Standard tires (215/45R17) will be 818.8mm in diamater from tread surface to tread surface. 225/50R17 will be 850.3 which is 32mm bigger (16mm at the top of the arch).

A 225/50R17 worn down to 4mm tread will be 8mm smaller, so only 8mm bigger at the top of the wheel arch (and 8mm at each side).

There's 10mm extra width as well of course. I run 225/45R17s as my summer tyres and have no issues on the legacy (215/45R17 is the standard for that also).

For the record I have nokian WRG2s (in the standard size) and they are great, although they are notably not so great at 4mm of tread remaining as when new.
